Spice Tree

SpiceTree

SpiceTree Resort is a chance to take a break and relax in a beautiful mountain setting surrounded by cardamon and black pepper. As soon as I arrived I knew I was going to enjoy some relaxation time. I completed check in and enjoyed a hibiscus welcome drink in a room with a billiards table and plenty of places to sit and enjoy a book. The attached balcony overlooked the pool and the views of the mountains. These are the views that are available all through the property and add to the feeling of being in a resort setting.

Beneath this building is the pool and sundeck with views of the Bison Valley. The pool water is from a mountain spring so a swim in such pristine water is an experience in itself. On my visit it was warm enough for swimming, but being in the mountain the temperature can be cool. On cooler days, this is still the perfect place to recline on the lounge chairs and soak up the mountain sun.

My room was the classic cottage with jacuzzi. All the rooms have brilliant valley views and cool breezes. The warm lights, wood floors and ceilings, sofa/day bed by the window balcony and coffee table add up to warm and cozy experience. However, the highlight would have to be the enormous “recharge room” with a shower stall, dressing table and jacuzzi overlooking the valley.

On site is also a coffee shop and bakery called 300 BC. As soon as you enter, you can smell the bread baking in the oven. Daily tea tasting is also held here, with different varieties of Munnar teas available as well as a briefing on the production of tea. The tasting ends with high tea.

All meals are served in the Family Dining Hall as they see meals as a chance to enjoy time with your with your family, friends and travel companions. This is also where they hold cooking classes if you want to learn some secret Indian recipes from the culinary team. There are no buffet style meals as they prioritise serving freshly prepared food based on your preferences. Some of the other activities available are Yoga and a spa that offers rejuvenation and relaxation therapies. They even have blank canvases with all the materials you need to discover your inner Da Vinci.

To be honest even with so much to do, I didn’t feel guilty at all doing nothing on my balcony and just taking in the views. Spice Tree is definitely on my list to return to when I have more time. Next time I may or may not do more than enjoy the views!

Spice Tree is included in our Ramble around the Ghats tour running in February 2025.
