7 Offbeat Things To Do in Haridwar Beyond Spiritual Circuit

February 6, 2025

Offbeat things to do in Haridwar go far beyond the city's 300+ temples and bustling ghats. Haridwar, meaning ‘Gateway to God,’ is one of India’s holiest cities, sitting at the foothills of the Himalayas where the Ganges first enters the plains. The name derives from two words, ‘Hari’ (Vishnu) and ‘Dwar’ (Gateway), emphasising its role in Hindu mythology.

However, Haridwar’s true charm lies in the experiences that go unnoticed by the usual visitors. Our recent journey revealed a side of Haridwar that most miss—a town with hidden cultural gems, rich history, offbeat adventures, and diverse local flavours. While the spiritual pilgrimage remains the prime focus for many, we uncovered lesser-known activities that showcase the city’s vibrant, multifaceted identity.

7 Offbeat Things To Do in Haridwar Beyond the Spiritual Circuit

Haridwar is not just about prayers and pilgrimages, it’s a city teeming with diverse experiences. This ancient city hides a wealth of cultural, natural, and culinary treasures, making it a compelling destination for all travellers. Whether you want to walk through historic villages, embark on a thrilling wildlife safari, or indulge in local street food, Haridwar has much more to offer than meets the eye.

Here are seven unique experiences that will show you a different side of Haridwar:

Kankhal Village Walk

A journey through time, Kankhal is an ancient settlement that is mentioned in the Mahabharata. The land where Lord Shiva avenged Sati’s death by slaying her father, King Daksh, the village exudes historical charm. We rode a tuk-tuk through its bustling streets, stopped by Maa Anandmayi Ashram, and stumbled upon the hidden yet captivating Patiala Palace—a long-forgotten riverside mansion of the erstwhile Patiala royals, now lost in ruins but still echoing regal grandeur.

Garhwali Cooking Class

At Amrit Bhawan, we had the opportunity to cook an authentic Garhwali meal with Chef Niraj. From grinding hemp seeds for the iconic Bhaang ki Chutney to slow-cooking the protein-rich Gehat (horse gram) dal, the session was an immersive culinary experience filled with stories, laughter, and delicious aromas. We ended the session by enjoying the fruits of our labour with a heartwarming meal overlooking the Ganga. This cooking class not only introduced us to Garhwali flavours but also gave us insight into the culinary traditions passed down through generations in Uttarakhand.

Hike and Picnic at Chandi Devi Temple

For those who love a mix of nature and mythology, a trek to Chandi Devi Temple is a must. Perched atop Neel Parvat, the temple offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Our hike, organised by Amrit Bhawan, led us through forested trails and culminated in a delightful breakfast picnic—freshly brewed chai, stuffed parathas, and a day spent soaking in the calmness of the hills is the best way to experience the natural beauty.

Street Food Hopping

Haridwar’s food scene extends beyond the temple prasad. Start your day with the iconic Puri-Aloo and halwa from Mohan Ji Puri Wale. For a spicy twist, Jain Chaat Bhandar serves mouthwatering Kanji Pakodis and no-onion, no-garlic Papdis. Don't miss Shankar Chaat Bhandar’s Daal-Kulcha and Pehelwanji’s Khasta Kachori at Kankhal Chowk, all promising an explosion of flavours unique to Haridwar’s culinary heritage.

Safari at Rajaji National Park

Rajaji National Park sprawls across 900 sq. km of dense forests, home to tigers, leopards, elephants, and over 300 species of birds. Embark on an exhilarating jeep safari through lush sal forests, hoping for a rare sighting of the elusive big cats. Among the four entry points, Chilla and Ranipur gates are the closest, making them ideal for a quick wildlife excursion. The park is a haven for nature enthusiasts and offers a thrilling escape into the wilderness, far from the usual tourist trails.

Souvenir Shopping in Moti Bazaar

A visit to Haridwar is incomplete without bringing back a piece of its culture. Moti Bazaar, the main market of the city, is filled with treasures like sandalwood items, brass utensils, Ayurvedic medicines, and rare books on Hindu philosophy. Our best finds? High-quality Chandan (sandalwood), beautifully handcrafted brassware, and cosy woollens made for perfect souvenirs. Walking through the lively market, interacting with shopkeepers, and discovering hidden gems makes for an engaging and rewarding experience.

Yoga & Massage Therapy

After days of exploration, our bodies craved relaxation. Haridwar’s deep-rooted wellness traditions make it an excellent place for a rejuvenating yoga session or an Ayurvedic massage. We indulged in a private yoga class by skilled practitioners, followed by a blissful massage, leaving us refreshed and re-energized. Whether you’re looking to deepen your yoga practice or simply unwind, Haridwar’s wellness offerings provide the perfect opportunity to reconnect with yourself.
