Itinerary

  • Welcome to India! Arrive at Bengaluru International Airport, where you will be met on arrival and transferred to your accommodation on the outskirts of Bangalore. The journey takes around an hour, passing through the city's expanding suburbs before reaching the peaceful rural surroundings of your stay.

Your accommodation is at Our Native Village, an eco-friendly resort designed in the style of a traditional village, offering an immersive sustainable travel experience. Set amidst open fields and farmland, the resort embraces nature, simplicity, and local traditions, allowing guests to experience authentic rural Karnataka while enjoying modern comforts. The property encourages guests to explore the countryside, interact with local artisans, and engage in farm-based activities.

Nearby, you may wish to visit Nrityagram, a renowned dance school and artists' village dedicated to preserving and teaching classical Indian dance forms. Founded in 1990, this unique community offers a serene setting for dancers to train and perform, blending art and nature in a way that makes it one of India’s most respected dance institutions. If visiting, you may have the chance to watch a rehearsal, meet the dancers, or simply admire the peaceful, creative atmosphere of the centre.

The remainder of the day is at leisure, giving you time to relax and settle in at your resort, enjoy a walk through the surrounding countryside, or experience some of the resort’s eco-friendly initiatives.

For those interested, an optional visit to Bangalore city can be arranged, time permitting. This six-hour city tour provides an insight into Bangalore’s colonial past, its transformation into India’s tech hub, and its lively urban culture. Travel like a local on the Metro and auto-rickshaws, exploring the city's contrasting architecture, bustling markets, and green spaces, offering a glimpse into the vibrant and dynamic character of Karnataka’s capital.

  • This morning, depart Bangalore for Coorg, a scenic six-hour drive through the rolling hills and coffee plantations of southern Karnataka. Along the way, stop to visit Bylekuppe, the largest Tibetan settlement in India outside of Dharamshala.

Bylekuppe is home to thousands of Tibetan monks, nuns, and refugees, offering a fascinating glimpse into Tibetan culture and Buddhist traditions. The settlement is dotted with serene monasteries, prayer halls, and colourful stupas, making it an ideal place to experience the spiritual atmosphere of Tibetan Buddhism in India. The most well-known monastery is the Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple), renowned for its massive golden Buddha statues, intricate murals, and vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. You may have the opportunity to witness monks chanting prayers, spinning prayer wheels, or engaging in daily rituals, adding to the tranquillity of the setting.

Take some time to explore the peaceful surroundings or enjoy a traditional Tibetan meal at a local café, where you can try delicacies such as momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), or butter tea before continuing your journey.

Arrive in Coorg and check in to The Ibnii Resort, your home for the next two nights. Set on 125 acres of a former coffee estate, this eco-conscious retreat is surrounded by misty hills, lush greenery, and tranquil lakes, making it a perfect escape into nature. The resort is designed to blend seamlessly with its forest surroundings, offering a peaceful atmosphere where birdsong and the sounds of cicadas replace the hustle of city life.

Stay in a wooden cottage, a beautifully crafted hideaway that offers a bird’s eye view of the surrounding landscape. The spacious sit-out is the perfect spot to relax with a coffee while taking in the soothing sights and sounds of nature. With over 40 species of birds found in and around the resort, you can enjoy birdwatching right from your private balcony, spotting everything from colourful kingfishers to majestic hornbills.

  • Enjoy a full day at leisure to relax at The Ibnii Resort or explore the surrounding area with your driver, taking in the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Coorg at your own pace.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, consider joining a Nature Walk with an in-house naturalist, where you’ll wander through thick forests, coffee plantations, and evergreen canopies alive with bird songs and monkey chatter. Learn about the local flora and fauna, spot some of the 40+ bird species that call this region home, and experience the tranquil beauty of Coorg’s rich biodiversity.

In the evening, take a guided plantation walk with a coffee expert, who will share the fascinating history of coffee cultivation in Coorg. Follow the journey of the coffee bean, from its humble origins as a sapling to the meticulous process of harvesting, drying, and roasting before it reaches your cup. At the resort’s coffee lab, indulge in a hands-on experience, where you can grind and brew your own coffee, learning the art of infusion while enjoying the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans. Along the way, gain insight into the lifestyle of Coorg’s coffee planters, known as the Kodavas, who have been cultivating coffee for generations.

For those keen to explore further, your driver can take you to nearby attractions, including the Madikeri Fort, an 18th-century fort originally built by Mudduraja, later modified by Tipu Sultan and the British. Walk through its massive stone walls, visit the Ganesha temple, museum, and secret underground passages, and enjoy panoramic views of the town from the fort’s ramparts.

Another highlight is Abbey Falls, a picturesque waterfall where water cascades from a 21-metre-high cliff into a rocky pool below, creating a spectacular sight surrounded by dense forest and coffee plantations. The short nature walk to the falls is particularly scenic, offering beautiful views along the way.

  • This morning, depart Coorg for Mysore, a scenic three-hour drive through the lush countryside of Karnataka. En route, stop at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers and home to some of South India’s most exotic bird species.

Located along the Kaveri River, Ranganathittu is the largest bird sanctuary in Karnataka, attracting thousands of migratory and resident birds each year. Take a boat ride through the sanctuary’s peaceful backwaters, gliding past small river islands where colonies of birds nest. Depending on the season, you may spot cormorants, darters, white ibises, spoonbills, painted storks, open-billed storks, white-necked storks, egrets, herons, kingfishers, and terns. Keep an eye out for mugger crocodiles basking along the riverbanks, adding to the sanctuary’s rich wildlife diversity.

After the visit, continue on to Mysore, where you will check in for a two-night stay at Efkays Homestay, a charming bungalow-style retreat on the outskirts of the city. Set in sprawling grounds, Efkays is the home of Raian and Jyotsna, warm and welcoming hosts who personally look after their guests. The homestay has just three spacious rooms, offering a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, with ample space to spread out and feel at home. Guests can unwind by the swimming pool, relax in outdoor seating areas, or simply enjoy the peaceful setting, which provides a refreshing contrast to the bustle of Mysore city, located just a short drive away. The homestay is fully serviced, with a kitchen offering a selection of both Indian and continental cuisine, ensuring a delightful stay.

In the afternoon, set out on a guided walking tour of historic Mysore, beginning at the old town square, where the iconic clock tower marks the heart of the city. Wander through bustling streets and alleyways, stopping at local eateries to sample authentic Mysore delicacies, such as dosas, Mysore pak, and strong South Indian coffee. Continue through the colourful markets, where vibrant stalls overflow with spices, silk, incense, and flowers, taking in the charm of old buildings and heritage landmarks along the way. The walk ends at Devaraja Market, Mysore’s famous fruit and vegetable bazaar, where vendors display fresh produce, aromatic sandalwood, and handmade crafts, offering an authentic glimpse into the city’s daily life and rich trading history.

The walking tour lasts around three hours, giving you a deeper appreciation of Mysore’s heritage, local culture, and thriving marketplace traditions before returning to your homestay for a relaxed evening.

  • This morning, set out on a guided electric cycle tour of Mysore, offering a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the city’s heritage, culture, and architecture. The tour will take you past some of Mysore’s key landmarks, allowing you to experience the city’s rich history and royal legacy, though it will not include entry into monuments.

Mysore, once the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore until 1947, was ruled for centuries by the Wodeyar dynasty, except for a brief period in the 18th century, when Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan held control. The Wodeyars were great patrons of art, architecture, and culture, shaping Mysore into a centre of learning, music, and craftsmanship. This enduring legacy has earned Mysore the title of ‘Cultural Capital of Karnataka’, a reputation reflected in its grand palaces, vibrant markets, and deep-rooted traditions.

In the afternoon, visit the Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas Palace), one of India’s most opulent royal residences, with a local guide. Built in 1912, the palace is an architectural marvel, blending Hindu, Islamic, and European influences.

Once home to the Wodeyar rulers, the palace is renowned for its sumptuous interiors, intricate carvings, and stained-glass ceilings. Highlights include the Kalyana Mandapa (Marriage Hall), decorated with murals depicting royal ceremonies and courtly life, and the ornate silver doors leading into the Durbar Hall. One of the palace’s most treasured artefacts is the magnificent gold throne, which is displayed during Dussehra festival celebrations, reflecting the grandeur of Mysore’s royal past.

With its stunning architecture, rich history, and royal treasures, the Mysore Palace remains a symbol of Karnataka’s regal heritage and an unforgettable highlight of the city.

  • This morning, depart Mysore for Masinagudi, a scenic four-hour drive through the rolling landscapes of southern Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The journey takes you past rural villages, lush forests, and the foothills of the Nilgiri Mountains, gradually immersing you in the natural beauty of the Western Ghats.

On arrival, check in to Jungle Hut Retreat, a family-run nature lodge set within a 20-acre estate at the base of the Nilgiri Hills. This peaceful retreat is located on the fringes of Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, offering a true wilderness experience while still providing comfort and warm hospitality.

Jungle Hut’s open setting allows for regular wildlife sightings, and it’s common to see herds of deer, langurs, peacocks, and even the occasional elephant wandering near the property. The resort's spacious cottages and verandahs provide the perfect vantage point to relax and take in the surrounding nature.

Among the retreat’s facilities is a swimming pool, ideal for cooling off in the afternoon heat, along with nature trails, an in-house library, and outdoor lounging areas, where you can unwind and listen to the sounds of the forest.

The remainder of the day is at leisure, allowing you to settle into the tranquil surroundings. You may choose to take a gentle walk around the estate, watch the changing light over the Nilgiri Hills, or simply enjoy the fresh mountain air from your private verandah.

  • This morning is at leisure, allowing you to explore the natural beauty of the area surrounding Jungle Hut Retreat at your own pace.

Jungle Hut is a hotspot for birdlife, making it an excellent location for birdwatching enthusiasts. The retreat offers guided birdwatching treks, where experienced birding guides will help you identify some of the region’s most fascinating species. The forests and grasslands around the retreat are home to a rich variety of birdlife, including malabar trogons, Indian pittas, paradise flycatchers, crested serpent eagles, and numerous species of hornbills, woodpeckers, and kingfishers.

For those looking for a more active experience, guided nature walks and treks are available at an additional cost, taking you deeper into the forests and foothills of the Nilgiris, where you can learn about the local flora, fauna, and ecosystems from knowledgeable naturalists.

Jungle Hut lies within the buffer zone of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, a vast wilderness that extends into the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. Though the two reserves span different states - Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Bandipur in Karnataka - they form part of the same expansive forest, a crucial habitat for tigers, elephants, leopards, and other wildlife within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

This afternoon, embark on a shared game drive in Bandipur National Park, one of India’s premier tiger reserves. Located approximately 20km from Jungle Hut, you’ll be driven to the park’s entrance, where you’ll board a safari vehicle for an exciting wildlife experience.

Once the private hunting ground of the Maharajas of Mysore, Bandipur is now a highly protected sanctuary, known for its thriving tiger population and rich biodiversity. As you drive through the dry deciduous forests, grassy meadows, and dense thickets, keep an eye out for some of the park’s most iconic wildlife. While tiger sightings are never guaranteed, Bandipur is home to a healthy population of Bengal tigers, as well as Indian leopards, sloth bears, dholes (wild dogs), and striped hyenas.

Among the most commonly sighted animals are the Indian elephant, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and the massive gaur (Indian bison) - the largest wild cattle species in the world. The park also boasts an impressive bird population, including peacocks, crested serpent eagles, changeable hawk-eagles, and a variety of owls and woodpeckers.

  • This morning, set off on a three-hour drive from Masinagudi to Ooty, a journey that takes you through scenic mountain roads, dense forests, and the winding hairpin bends of the Nilgiris. As you ascend into the cooler hill country, the landscape shifts to rolling tea estates, eucalyptus groves, and mist-covered valleys, making for a picturesque drive.

On arrival in Ooty, enjoy an orientation tour with your driver, getting a glimpse of the town’s colonial heritage, bustling markets, and scenic viewpoints. Once a popular summer retreat for the British, Ooty is dotted with old churches, heritage buildings, and sprawling botanical gardens. Drive past Ooty Lake, a serene artificial lake surrounded by tall trees, and see the charming railway station, part of the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway. After the short tour, continue your journey about an hour further into the hills to your accommodation.

Check in at Red Hill Nature Resort, a family-run retreat set amidst the Red Hill Tea Estate. Perched on a hilltop, the resort offers magnificent views of Emerald Lake and the surrounding valleys, with a backdrop of lush hills and tea plantations.

The main bungalow, built in 1875 by an Englishman named Willie Collins, retains its historic charm, while the surrounding seven cottages provide a peaceful and rustic stay. The spacious rooms feature a cosy fireplace, a private verandah, and an attached bathroom, offering a blend of heritage character and modern comfort. Each room is positioned to provide stunning views - some overlooking the tranquil waters of Emerald Lake, while others face the rolling hills and tea gardens.

The resort takes pride in its sustainable practices, with organic vegetables grown on-site and used in its farm-to-table dining experience. The combination of fresh mountain air, warm hospitality, and serene natural surroundings makes Red Hill Nature Resort an ideal place to unwind and experience the charm of the Nilgiri Hills.

  • Your day is at leisure at Red Hill Tea Estate, allowing you to unwind and take in the peaceful surroundings. You may choose to spend a slow morning on the verandah, enjoying the crisp mountain air, breathtaking views of Emerald Lake, and the rolling tea-covered hills that stretch into the distance.

For those keen to explore, Red Hill offers a variety of activities that provide insight into the region’s landscape, agriculture, and local way of life.

Biking and Hiking - Venture out on foot or by bicycle to explore the winding trails around Red Hill, set amidst rolling countryside, forested slopes, and tea plantations. The area is sparsely populated, making it ideal for quiet walks or scenic bike rides. For a more adventurous option, trek to the Red Hill Mountains, where a panoramic view of the valley unfolds, revealing a patchwork of forests, agricultural lands, tea estates, and shimmering water bodies. Birdwatchers will find the area rewarding, with a variety of local and migratory species frequently spotted.

Tea Plantation Tour and Tasting - Take a guided walk through the tea plantations, where you can pluck fresh tea leaves, feel their texture, and learn about the art of tea cultivation, harvesting, and processing. Follow this with a tea-tasting session, where you can sample different varieties of tea and learn to distinguish their subtle flavours and aromas.

Organic Farm Visit - The region around Ooty is known for its abundant vegetable farms, many of which use traditional and organic farming methods. A visit to a nearby organic farm offers an opportunity to see how local vegetables are grown, taste freshly harvested produce, and learn about the sustainable agricultural practices that support the community.

  • Depart Ooty early this morning for the scenic eight-hour drive to Manupetty, a journey that takes you through changing landscapes, from the misty Nilgiri Hills to the drier plains and farmlands of Tamil Nadu.

For a memorable start to the day, consider taking a short section of the route on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, from Ooty to Coonoor. This UNESCO-listed heritage railway, built in the 19th century, is a remarkable feat of engineering, featuring steep inclines, sharp bends, and stunning bridges that offer breathtaking views of tea plantations, deep valleys, and dense forests. After this iconic train experience, rejoin your vehicle in Coonoor and continue the drive towards Manupetty.

Upon arrival, check in to Chinnar Eco Living, an eco-friendly retreat set within a working fruit farm. The farm primarily cultivates pomegranates and papayas, alongside a variety of other seasonal fruits, creating a lush and peaceful environment.

With just six thoughtfully designed rooms, each featuring a private plunge pool, Chinnar Eco Living offers a comfortable yet sustainable stay, blending modern amenities with an emphasis on environmental responsibility. The retreat has been constructed using recycled and locally sourced materials, ensuring a minimal ecological footprint.

Located in a rural Tamil village, the property provides a unique opportunity to experience traditional village life. During your stay, you can observe local farming practices, interact with villagers, and gain insight into how agriculture shapes the rhythm of daily life in this region.

Spend the remainder of the day at leisure, relaxing by the plunge pool, wandering through the fruit orchards, or simply enjoying the tranquil surroundings. For those keen to explore, the nearby countryside offers opportunities for nature walks, birdwatching, and visits to local markets and cultural sites.

  • Enjoy a full day at leisure at Chinnar Eco Living, with the opportunity to take a guided village walk, arranged by the eco-lodge, offering an insight into daily life in rural Tamil Nadu. Stroll through the narrow village paths, past traditional houses, small farms, and local markets, where you can observe artisans at work, farmers tending to their fields, and the slower rhythms of village life.

For those looking for more immersive experiences, several optional activities are available:

Coconut Farm Visit - Gain an insight into the importance of the coconut tree in local agriculture and daily life. Visit a working coconut farm, where you can see the various stages of processing: from harvesting and drying to extracting coconut oil, coir fibres, and making household products. The coconut tree is often referred to as the "Tree of Life" due to its many uses, including food, drink, building materials, and fuel.

Birdwatching - The microhabitat around the property is considered one of the richest in Kerala in terms of biodiversity, particularly for birdlife, butterflies, and dragonflies. India is home to over 1,250 bird species, and surveys in the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary have recorded more than 211 species in this region. The surrounding landscape provides an excellent setting to spot hornbills, bee-eaters, drongos, owls, and a variety of waterbirds.

Village Walks & Bicycle Rides - Experience the scenic countryside surrounding Chinnar Eco Living by taking a gentle walk or bicycle ride. Pass through rolling farmland, small villages, and forested areas, where you can observe local life, traditional agricultural practices, and enjoy the serene landscape.

For those seeking a more adventurous experience, a visit to the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary offers an incredible opportunity to explore one of Kerala’s unique protected areas. Located in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats, the sanctuary is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including grizzled giant squirrels, star tortoises, tufted grey langurs, gaur (Indian bison), spotted deer, slender lorises, wild elephants, crocodiles, and elusive predators like tigers and leopards. The sanctuary is also a well-known repository of medicinal plants, with local tribal communities continuing to use these plants for traditional healing practices.

For those keen on trekking, the sanctuary offers guided treks, organised by the Department of Forests and Wildlife in collaboration with local tribal eco-development committees. These moderate to challenging treks range up to 15km one way, following jungle trails, rocky terrain, and steep hills, providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in the wild beauty of the Western Ghats. A morning departure is recommended, with the duration of the walk ranging from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the route and difficulty level.

Whether you choose to relax and observe nature from the comfort of your eco-lodge, explore local life on foot or by bicycle, or embark on a wildlife adventure in the sanctuary, today offers a wonderful mix of culture, nature, and discovery.

  • This morning, set off on a four-hour drive from Chinnar to Yellappetty, a remote tea estate just beyond Munnar, where the landscape transforms into a patchwork of rolling plantations, mist-covered hills, and forested slopes. Perched halfway up the slopes of Meesapulimala, the second-highest peak in South India, Camp Footprint offers a truly immersive nature experience, with breathtaking views of towering hills on one side and deep valleys on the other. With its secluded setting, breathtaking views, and close connection to nature, Camp Footprint provides a unique glamping experience in the heart of the Western Ghats.

  • Your day is at leisure, offering the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Western Ghats, exploring the diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity of the hills.

Start the morning with a guided nature walk, an ideal way to experience the changing terrain that surrounds Camp Footprint. The walk takes you through open grasslands and dense Shola forests, offering a chance to spot endemic birds, small mammals, and unique plant species. Accompanied by a naturalist, this experience provides insight into the delicate ecosystems that thrive in these high-altitude forests.

An early morning departure is recommended, as the cooler temperatures and quiet surroundings make it easier to observe birdlife, including species that are found only in this region. Begin the day with a cup of tea or coffee at the camp before setting off, as your guide introduces you to the bird species and wildlife that call these hills home.

For those looking for a more challenging adventure, an optional trek to Meesapulimala is available. While South India’s highest peak remains off-limits, Meesapulimala (2,640m), the second-highest peak, offers a truly spectacular hiking experience. The trek winds through grasslands, ridges, and forested slopes, gradually leading up to breathtaking panoramic views. Nearing the summit, watch as the clouds swirl around the lower peaks, creating an ever-changing mountain landscape.

  • This morning, take a scenic walk down to Yellappetty, where you will meet your driver and begin your six-hour journey to Cochin. The drive winds through mountain roads, tea estates, and small villages, gradually descending from the cool hills of the Western Ghats into the lush, tropical lowlands of Kerala. As you travel, notice the shift in landscape and climate, with the misty plantations giving way to coconut groves, backwaters, and vibrant towns.

  • This morning, set out on a guided bicycle tour of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, a wonderful way to experience the historical charm and multicultural heritage of this fascinating coastal town.

As India’s oldest European settlement, Fort Kochi retains an old-world atmosphere, with its peaceful tree-lined streets, colonial-era mansions, and diverse architectural influences. Over the centuries, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, Jewish, and British traders and settlers have all left their mark on the city, creating a unique blend of cultures and traditions that is still visible today.

With a local guide leading the way, ride through the historic quarters, passing by centuries-old churches, bustling spice markets, and colonial mansions that once served as Portuguese residences, Dutch bastions, and British tea-broking offices. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating stories about the buildings, the people who lived here, and how Fort Kochi evolved into the vibrant cultural hub it is today.

The tour takes you past the Dutch Cemetery, a peaceful spot by the beach where tombstones dating back to the 1700s tell the story of early European settlers. Continue on to the Maritime Museum and Indo-Portuguese Museum, both offering insights into Kochi’s naval history and colonial connections.

Make a stop at Dhobi Ghat, an open-air laundry run by Tamil washermen, where rows of clothes are beaten, scrubbed, and hung out to dry on long lines. This traditional method of washing has been practised for generations, providing laundry services to local homes, hotels, and hospitals.

After your ride, return to your accommodation, with the remainder of the day at leisure to relax or explore further at your own pace.
