Itinerary

  • Welcome to India! You will be met on arrival in Chennai and transferred by private vehicle to Pondicherry, located around three hours south along the Coromandel Coast. The drive takes you through Tamil Nadu’s coastal countryside, dotted with small villages, fields of rice and sugarcane, and glimpses of rural life along the way.

If your flight arrives in the morning, there is the option to stop en route at Mahabalipuram (also known as Mamallapuram), a coastal town renowned for its remarkable collection of ancient rock-cut monuments. Once a bustling port of the Pallava dynasty, Mahabalipuram is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to some of South India’s finest early stone architecture.

Among the highlights here is the famous Arjuna’s Penance, one of the largest and most detailed bas-relief carvings in the world. Measuring an impressive 29 metres long and 9 metres high, the frieze is believed to depict scenes from the Mahabharata, featuring gods, animals, sages and celestial beings in vivid, lifelike poses. The site also includes monolithic rathas (temple chariots carved from single pieces of stone), cave sanctuaries, and the iconic Shore Temple, which stands close to the sea and has withstood centuries of wind and salt air.

After exploring Mahabalipuram, continue your journey south to Pondicherry, where you’ll settle in for the first stop on your South India tour.

  • Enjoy a full day to explore Pondicherry, a charming seaside town that blends French colonial heritage with South Indian culture. With its tree-lined boulevards, pastel-hued townhouses, café culture and relaxed pace, Pondicherry has a character unlike anywhere else in India.

Start your day with a guided walking tour of the French Quarter, also known as White Town. This historic district is filled with colonial-era buildings featuring high ceilings, grand verandahs and mustard-coloured walls, many now restored as boutique hotels, galleries or cafés. As you stroll through the quiet streets, you’ll pass churches, parks and heritage buildings that offer glimpses of the town’s French colonial past.

Next, visit the Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual community founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo and his collaborator, the Mother. The ashram has grown into a diverse and active community that continues to attract spiritual seekers from around the world. Within its grounds, you can visit the peaceful meditation spaces, as well as the nearby paper-making and incense units, where beautifully handcrafted paper products and fragrant incense are produced using sustainable methods. These workshops are run as part of the ashram’s efforts to support meaningful work and creativity.

Later, take time to explore Pondicherry’s vibrant shopping scene. The town is filled with small boutiques and artisan stores, tucked into nearly every street and laneway. Here you’ll find a wide variety of handmade and locally designed goods, including textiles, leather products, homewares, pottery, aromatics, fashion and antiques. Whether you’re after block-printed fabrics, essential oils, hand-stitched journals or silver jewellery, you’re likely to come across something special and distinctive.

You may also wish to spend some time by the sea. The Pondicherry Promenade is a popular gathering place in the early mornings and late afternoons, where locals and visitors alike come to enjoy the breeze and watch the waves roll in. Grab a coffee or a cool drink at one of the cafés overlooking the Bay of Bengal and take in the town’s coastal charm.

  • After breakfast, set off on the five-hour drive to Tanjore, travelling through the agricultural heartland of Tamil Nadu. Along the way, stop at a traditional bronze-casting workshop, where skilled artisans create statues of Hindu deities using the ancient lost-wax technique. This method, unchanged for centuries, involves creating a wax model that is coated in clay, then melted out and replaced with molten bronze. The result is a detailed and unique sculpture, often destined for temples or private shrines. Watching the process offers insight into a highly skilled craft that continues to play an important role in religious and artistic life in South India.

Continue on to Tanjore (also known as Thanjavur), a city with a rich cultural legacy, particularly in temple architecture, classical music and South Indian art. On arrival, check in to your accommodation and enjoy a short break before heading out to explore the city’s most important site.

This afternoon, visit the Brihadeeswara Temple, one of the most remarkable temples in India and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Commissioned by the Chola king Raja Raja I in the early 11th century, the temple is an extraordinary feat of engineering and devotion. Unlike the more crowded and colourful Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Brihadeeswara has a quiet grandeur and an architectural purity that sets it apart.

The temple’s central tower, or vimana, rises 63 metres into the sky and is topped by a single block of granite weighing over 80 tonnes. How this massive stone was hoisted to the top remains one of the temple’s great engineering mysteries. The temple’s inner sanctum and surrounding corridors are adorned with detailed frescoes and carvings, and the grounds include a giant Nandi (sacred bull) statue, carved from a single piece of stone.

Arriving around sunset allows you to see the temple in its most atmospheric light, as the warm hues of the stone glow in the fading sun and the temple bells echo softly across the complex. With fewer crowds in the evening, it’s the perfect time to take in the scale, symmetry and serenity of this architectural masterpiece.

  • After a relaxed breakfast, depart Tanjore for the five-hour journey to Madurai, with a fascinating stop en route in the Chettinad region. This area is known for its striking heritage mansions, distinctive cuisine and deep-rooted cultural traditions. Once home to wealthy Chettiar merchant families, the region flourished during the 19th and early 20th centuries when the Chettiars traded extensively across Southeast Asia. Their success is reflected in the grand mansions they built, many of which still stand today, with wide courtyards, Italian marble, Belgian glass, Burmese teak and elaborate tile work sourced from around the world.

Take time to visit one or two of these beautifully restored mansions, which offer a glimpse into the opulence and refined lifestyle of the Chettiar community. Many of these mansions now operate as heritage stays or museums, preserving the region’s unique architectural style and way of life. While here, enjoy a traditional Chettinad lunch, known for its bold flavours and generous use of spices. Dishes often include peppery chicken, spiced vegetables, tamarind-based curries and fragrant rice preparations, all served on banana leaves in the traditional way.

After lunch, continue your journey south to Madurai, the second-largest city in Tamil Nadu and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. With a recorded history stretching back over two thousand years, Madurai has long been a centre of learning, trade and religious devotion. The city was once the capital of the Pandya dynasty and has been a key hub in Tamil culture for centuries.

On arrival, check in to your accommodation and settle in. As you drive through the city, you’ll begin to see glimpses of the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple, with its towering gopurams (gateway towers) rising above the rooftops. Madurai’s vibrant energy and deep spiritual atmosphere make it one of the most captivating cities in South India. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure, allowing you to relax after the day’s journey or begin to explore the surrounding area at your own pace.

  • Spend this morning exploring Madurai with a local guide, who will help bring the city’s deep history and vibrant daily life to light. Begin with a visit to one of the city’s bustling fruit and vegetable markets, where stalls overflow with colourful produce, fragrant spices, and the rhythms of everyday trade. It’s a great way to experience the energy of the city and observe daily life at close quarters.

Continue on to the Gandhi Memorial Museum, housed in the historic Tamukkam Palace. The museum presents a thoughtful overview of India’s struggle for independence and Mahatma Gandhi’s role in it, with particular focus on his time in South India. Among its exhibits is a piece of the bloodstained cloth said to have been worn by Gandhi at the time of his assassination, as well as rare photographs, letters and artefacts that shed light on his life and philosophy.

The highlight of the morning is a guided visit to the magnificent Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of the most important and visually stunning temples in all of India. Dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi (an incarnation of Parvati) and her consort Shiva, the temple complex is vast, vibrant and central to religious life in the city. The temple’s 12 outer gopurams (gateway towers) soar above the city skyline, each covered in thousands of brightly painted sculptures of gods, goddesses, mythical creatures and deities.

Inside the temple, you’ll find pillared halls, sacred ponds, and shrines alive with the sounds of chanting, the scent of incense, and the steady flow of devotees. The temple is not just a historic monument but a living place of worship that plays a vital role in the spiritual and social life of Madurai. Your guide will explain the temple’s history, mythology, and symbolism, offering deeper insight into its enduring importance.

The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. You might choose to browse the local markets and textile shops, as Madurai is known for its cotton, handloom fabrics and traditional jewellery. Alternatively, take a relaxed walk through the old city with your guide, passing roadside flower stalls, bookshops and sweet vendors, and perhaps stop at a busy tea stall for a cup of chai and a chat with the locals.

  • This morning, depart Madurai and drive around four hours to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of South India’s most visited and ecologically significant protected areas. The journey takes you through scenic landscapes as you leave the plains of Tamil Nadu and climb into the cool, forested hills of the Western Ghats, crossing into Kerala. The road winds through tea plantations, small villages and misty valleys before reaching the town of Thekkady, the gateway to the park.

Located on the border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Periyar National Park is a lush, mountainous reserve best known for its herds of wild elephants and its large artificial lake, which lies at the heart of the sanctuary. The area supports a rich variety of wildlife including sambar deer, wild boar, bison, macaques, langurs, and if you're lucky, even tigers and leopards. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with hornbills, kingfishers and Malabar grey cuckoos among the many species found here.

In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to choose from several rewarding activities.

Elephant Experience - Spend time with domesticated elephants at a local camp. Watch as the mahouts (handlers) wash and care for the elephants, and assist in feeding them. This is a chance to learn about the bond between elephants and their caretakers and gain insight into their daily routines.

Nature Walk - Join a guided walk through the forest with a trained local naturalist. These walks offer a quieter, more immersive way to experience the park, with opportunities to spot wildlife and learn about the native flora. The walks are generally well-paced and provide insight into the interconnected ecosystems of the Western Ghats.

Spice Plantation Tour - Visit one of the area’s many spice gardens for a guided tour. Kerala is famous for its production of spices such as cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, and cloves. Walk through the plantation with a guide who will explain how these spices are grown, harvested and processed. Many tours include a traditional Kerala lunch made with ingredients sourced directly from the plantation.

Later in the evening, you have the option to attend a performance of Kalaripayattu, an ancient martial art form that originated in Kerala. Known for its graceful and athletic movements, weaponry techniques and disciplined training, Kalaripayattu is often considered one of the oldest martial arts in the world. Demonstrations are held in a traditional theatre setting and offer a fascinating insight into Kerala’s cultural heritage.

  • This morning, travel from the forested hills of Periyar to the low-lying backwaters of Alleppey (Alappuzha), a drive of around four to five hours. As you descend from the Western Ghats, the landscape gradually changes - tea and spice plantations give way to coconut groves, rivers and flat, green plains. On arrival in Alleppey, you’ll board a traditional Kerala houseboat, known locally as a kettuvallam, for an overnight cruise through the famed backwaters.

These slow-moving boats, once used to transport rice and spices, have been carefully converted into comfortable floating homes, complete with ensuite bedrooms, a dining area and an open deck for taking in the passing scenery. Staff on board typically include a captain, a chef and a crew member to ensure your comfort and a relaxed journey.

Shortly after boarding, lunch will be served on board - freshly prepared Keralan dishes often featuring fish or prawns from the backwaters, locally grown rice, vegetables and a variety of aromatic curries and chutneys. Dining on the open deck with views of the water is one of the highlights of the experience.

As the boat begins its gentle journey, you’ll meander through a peaceful network of canals, lagoons and lakes. Along the way, you’ll pass scenes of daily life - fishermen casting their nets, children waving from the banks, women washing clothes or collecting water, and farmers working in the emerald-green paddy fields. The canals are edged with coconut palms, banana plants and jackfruit trees, creating a soothing and distinctly tropical backdrop.

Drifting through the backwaters is a quintessential South Indian experience - one that invites you to slow down and absorb the beauty and rhythm of local life. With no traffic and little noise beyond the sounds of birdlife and the splash of the oar, the journey is peaceful and meditative.

As evening approaches, the boat will moor in a quiet spot along the banks while your dinner is on the grill. You can enjoy the sunset from the deck, perhaps with a cup of chai or a cold drink in hand, as the sky shifts into pastel shades and the birds return to roost.

  • After breakfast on board your houseboat, disembark in Alleppey, where the stillness of the backwaters gives way to the quiet bustle of this historic town. Once known as the 'Venice of the East', Alleppey has long been an important centre of trade, fishing and coir production. This morning, there is the option to take a short walking tour of the town, led by a member of the local Conservation Society. This guided stroll offers insight into the traditional industries that have sustained the community for generations - particularly the coir trade, in which fibres from coconut husks are used to make rope, mats and other products.

As you walk through the town's streets and canal-side laneways, your guide will point out examples of colonial architecture, explain local building techniques, and share stories about the area's economic and cultural history. You'll also learn about the ongoing efforts to preserve Alleppey’s heritage structures, promote sustainable tourism, and protect the fragile ecosystem of the backwaters. This tour offers a deeper connection to the place, going beyond the water-bound views seen from the houseboat.

Following the walk, continue your journey with a two-hour drive north to Cochin (Kochi), a coastal city steeped in history and shaped by waves of traders, settlers and explorers from around the world. The route passes through small towns, rice fields and coconut groves, with occasional glimpses of temple towers and church spires along the way.

On arrival in Cochin, check in to your accommodation and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure. With its mix of Portuguese, Dutch, British and Indian influences, Cochin is a unique blend of old and new, and a fitting place to conclude your journey through South India.

  • This morning, set out to explore Fort Kochi, a historic coastal enclave that tells the story of centuries of trade, migration and cultural exchange. Once a thriving port on the spice route, Fort Kochi has been shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, British, Chinese and Jewish influences, each leaving their mark on the town’s architecture, cuisine and character.

Accompanied by a local guide, begin your walking tour at the Chinese fishing nets, an iconic symbol of the city. These massive cantilevered nets, introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan in the 14th century, are still operated by local fishermen today using traditional methods. Set against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea, they offer a glimpse into the maritime history that made Cochin one of India’s most important trading ports.

Next, visit the Dutch Palace (also known as Mattancherry Palace), originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later renovated by the Dutch. The palace is known for its beautifully preserved murals depicting scenes from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as its collection of royal artefacts and portraits of the former rulers of Cochin.

Continue on to the Paradesi Synagogue, one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth, built in 1568 by Cochin’s Jewish community. Located in the historic area of Jew Town, the synagogue features hand-painted Chinese tiles, Belgian chandeliers and ancient Torah scrolls. Your guide will share the story of the once-thriving Jewish community in Kerala and the important role they played in the city’s commercial and cultural life.

After your guided tour, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. You might choose to browse the boutiques and antique shops of Jew Town, known for its textiles, crafts, spices and vintage treasures. Fort Kochi is also home to a growing number of independent galleries, design studios and cafés, making it a great place to wander and soak in the laid-back yet artistic atmosphere. If you prefer to unwind, relax at your hotel or enjoy a long lunch at one of the seaside restaurants overlooking the harbour.

In the evening, attend a performance of Kathakali, Kerala’s most iconic classical dance-drama. Performed in a traditional theatre setting, Kathakali combines stylised gestures, dramatic facial expressions, elaborate costumes and vivid face makeup to bring ancient Hindu epics to life. You’ll have the opportunity to arrive early and watch the performers prepare, applying their intricate makeup and donning their elaborate attire - a ritual in itself. The performance offers a dramatic and captivating introduction to Kerala’s rich performing arts traditions, rounding out your visit to Cochin with a deeper appreciation for the region’s cultural heritage.

  • This morning, you’ll be transferred to Cochin International Airport for your onward journey. Whether you’re flying home or continuing your travels in India, your driver will ensure you arrive in good time for check-in, allowing for a smooth and unhurried departure.
