Itinerary

  • Welcome to India! Delhi, India’s sprawling capital and one of the country’s most vibrant cities, is home to more than 14 million people. It’s a place of constant movement and layered history, where ancient monuments and colonial-era buildings sit alongside modern infrastructure and growing urban sprawl. The energy can feel immediate the moment you arrive - crowded roads, colourful scenes and a sense that everything is happening at once.

Upon arrival at the airport, you’ll be met by a local representative and transferred to your hotel. The drive into the city gives you your first glimpse of Delhi’s remarkable contrasts - from sleek expressways to rickshaw-filled lanes, from glass towers to roadside tea stalls. Take the rest of the day to settle in and adjust to your surroundings before beginning your exploration of North India.

  • Today, enjoy a guided tour of Delhi, one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities and a vibrant showcase of India’s diverse history. With your local guide, explore key landmarks that reflect the city’s evolution from ancient capital to modern metropolis. The day’s itinerary is flexible and can be adjusted to suit your interests and pace.

Start with Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century. From here, weave your way through the bustling lanes of Chandni Chowk by foot or cycle rickshaw, soaking up the atmosphere of one of Delhi’s oldest markets. Nearby, visit Raj Ghat, the serene memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.

Later, admire the unique architecture of the Baha’i Lotus Temple or opt for a visit to Humayun’s Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage site and precursor to the Taj Mahal. You might also explore the colonial landmarks of New Delhi - such as India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan (the Presidential Palace), and the wide boulevards designed by Lutyens during the British Raj.

In the afternoon, visit the Qutb Minar complex, home to a soaring 12th-century minaret and some of Delhi’s oldest surviving Islamic structures. Depending on your interests, your guide can also include visits to local art galleries, museums, markets, or quiet corners of the city rarely seen by tourists.

  • This morning, depart by road for Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, located approximately six hours away. As you leave Delhi behind, the landscape gradually shifts from the urban sprawl of the capital to rural plains and scattered villages, offering a glimpse of everyday life in northern India.

Jaipur, often referred to as the ‘Pink City’, takes its nickname from the distinctive terracotta hue that colours many of its buildings - originally painted to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876 and now a symbol of Rajput hospitality and good fortune. The city is a fascinating blend of royal heritage, vibrant street life, and rich architectural traditions.

On arrival, check in to your hotel and spend the afternoon exploring on foot. Wander through the narrow lanes and bustling bazaars of the old city, where stalls overflow with textiles, silver jewellery, spices, pottery and vibrant Rajasthani handicrafts. The atmosphere is lively and colourful, with shopkeepers calling out and motorbikes weaving through crowds.

As you explore, make time to sample some local treats - perhaps stop for a creamy lassi served in a traditional clay cup, or indulge in a scoop of kulfi, a dense Indian-style ice cream that’s especially refreshing in the afternoon heat. It’s a relaxed way to begin your time in Jaipur, soaking up the sounds, flavours and rhythm of this historic city.

  • Today, set out with a local guide to explore Jaipur, a city steeped in regal history and architectural elegance. The legacy of the Rajput kings is visible throughout the city - from its majestic hilltop forts and ornate palaces to its wide boulevards and city planning, which reflect a sophisticated sense of order and vision. As you explore, your guide will share stories of Jaipur’s royal past and introduce you to the unique blend of Hindu, Mughal and European influences that define the city’s character.

You might begin with a visit to the iconic Amber Fort, set on a hillside just outside the city, with its grand courtyards, mirrored halls and views over Maota Lake. Then, back in the city centre, explore the City Palace complex - still home to the royal family - which houses museums and courtyards rich in textiles, weaponry and regal artefacts. Just next door is the Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO-listed observatory filled with enormous instruments built by the city’s founder, Maharaja Jai Singh II, to track celestial movements and time.

If time allows, you could also visit the Hawa Mahal, or ‘Palace of Winds’, with its intricate honeycombed façade designed to allow royal women to observe life on the streets below while remaining unseen. For something more off the beaten path, consider a stop at the Albert Hall Museum or take a gentle stroll through the lesser-visited neighbourhoods that offer a quieter view of local life.

Later in the afternoon, you may wish to unwind at your heritage hotel, many of which are converted palaces or havelis with courtyards, verandahs and gardens perfect for a relaxed cup of chai. Alternatively, venture out for a spot of shopping - Jaipur is famous for its traditional crafts including hand-block printed textiles, blue pottery, gemstone jewellery, leather footwear and puppets. Local artisans continue to practise techniques passed down through generations, and exploring the shops and workshops is a rewarding way to engage with the city’s creative side.

  • This morning, set off on a six-hour drive to Agra, travelling through the heart of rural Rajasthan and into the state of Uttar Pradesh. Along the way, stop for a visit to Fatehpur Sikri, a remarkable former capital built by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the late 16th century.

Constructed almost entirely from red sandstone, Fatehpur Sikri was intended to be a grand imperial city, blending Islamic and Hindu architectural styles in an ambitious display of power and artistry. However, despite its scale and significance, it was abandoned just a few decades after completion - likely due to water shortages - and remains largely untouched by later development. As a result, the complex is unusually well-preserved, giving visitors a rare opportunity to walk through palaces, audience halls, courtyards and mosques that appear much as they did over four centuries ago.

Your guide will take you through highlights such as the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), with its intricately carved central pillar, and the Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India at the time of its construction. You’ll also see the impressive Buland Darwaza, a towering gateway that stands nearly 40 metres high and marks the southern entrance to the complex.

After your visit, continue the journey to Agra, arriving in the late afternoon. Once the capital of the Mughal Empire, Agra is home to some of India’s most iconic architecture and will be your base for exploring the Taj Mahal and other historical sites. Check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.

  • Rise early this morning for a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, one of the most celebrated monuments in the world. In the soft light of dawn, the white marble takes on delicate hues of pink and gold - an unforgettable sight that captures the beauty and elegance of Mughal architecture at its height. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj is more than just a monument - it is a symbol of enduring love and artistic mastery.

After breakfast back at the hotel, continue your exploration of Agra with a visit to the imposing Agra Fort. With the help of a local guide, step into the world of the Mughal emperors and hear stories of power struggles, betrayals and royal grandeur. The fort itself is a fascinating blend of red sandstone and white marble, housing palaces, audience halls, courtyards and pavilions. It was not only a military stronghold but also a royal residence, and from its ramparts, you can catch a distant view of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna River.

Following your visit, depart Agra for the drive to Orchha, a journey of around five hours through the rural heart of northern India. Along the way, you'll pass through farmland, small towns and open countryside, offering a glimpse of everyday life outside the larger cities.

Arrive in the riverside town of Orchha by late afternoon. Smaller and more relaxed than Agra or Jaipur, Orchha is known for its peaceful setting, faded palaces and centuries-old temples, many of which seem frozen in time. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

  • This morning, begin with a visit to the temples and cenotaphs of Orchha, which offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s royal and religious past. Nestled along the banks of the Betwa River, these well-preserved structures include soaring temples dedicated to Rama and other Hindu deities, as well as striking chhatris - elegant cenotaphs built in memory of the Bundela kings. Their domed rooftops and riverside setting make for a particularly photogenic start to the day.

After exploring Orchha, set off on the four-hour drive to Khajuraho, travelling through quiet rural landscapes, scattered villages and patches of forested countryside. You’ll arrive in Khajuraho by mid-afternoon and check in to your hotel.

Famed for its extraordinary collection of temples, Khajuraho is one of the most remarkable heritage sites in India. Built between the 10th and 12th centuries by the Chandela dynasty, the temples are known for their detailed stone carvings that depict scenes of daily life, mythology, and famously, sensual and erotic imagery inspired by the Kama Sutra. These sculptures are admired not only for their subject matter but also for the incredible craftsmanship and balance of form, symbolising both spiritual and physical aspects of life.

In the evening, enjoy a sound and light show at the main temple complex, which brings the history of Khajuraho to life through narration, music and lighting that highlights the intricate details of the temples after dark. It's a fitting way to be introduced to this UNESCO World Heritage site, providing context before a more in-depth visit the following day.

  • This morning, explore the western group of temples at Khajuraho with a local guide, who will bring to life the fascinating history, symbolism and craftsmanship behind these extraordinary monuments. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed group is the most well-preserved and impressive of all the temple clusters in Khajuraho, and features stunning examples of both religious and erotic stone carvings. Your guide will help interpret the scenes depicted - ranging from divine figures and mythical creatures to musicians, dancers and moments of everyday life - offering a deeper understanding of the temples’ artistic and spiritual significance.

Later in the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight to Varanasi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and among the most sacred for Hindus. Set on the banks of the River Ganges, Varanasi draws millions of pilgrims each year who come to perform rituals, bathe in the holy waters, and seek spiritual liberation.

Upon arrival, you'll be met and transferred to your hotel. In the early evening, head to the ghats - the stone steps leading down to the river - for one of Varanasi’s most iconic experiences: the daily Ganga Aarti ceremony. Held at Dashashwamedh Ghat, this ritual is a mesmerising blend of fire, chanting, music and movement. Priests perform synchronised offerings to the river goddess with lamps, incense and conch shells, as hundreds of devotees and onlookers gather by the water or watch from boats.

Your local guide will explain the meaning behind the ceremony and the role it plays in Hindu spiritual life, giving you valuable context as you witness this powerful tradition unfold against the backdrop of the Ganges at dusk. It’s a memorable and moving introduction to the spiritual heart of India.

  • Begin the day with an early morning boat ride on the River Ganges, a highlight of any visit to Varanasi. As the sun rises over the city, the ghats come alive with activity - pilgrims bathing in the holy river, priests performing morning rituals, and locals beginning their day. From the water, you'll have a unique perspective of the city’s spiritual rhythm, with the soft light illuminating the historic facades, temple spires and the countless small fires used for cremation rites at the Manikarnika Ghat.

After breakfast back at your hotel, continue exploring Varanasi with visits to some of its key temples and sacred sites. You may visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, or the Durga Temple, known for its distinctive red ochre colour. Your guide will provide insight into the religious significance of these places and how they shape everyday life in the city.

Later, travel a short distance to Sarnath, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. It was here that Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma. The site includes the Dhamek Stupa, ancient monastic ruins, and the Sarnath Museum, which houses a fine collection of Buddhist artefacts, including the Lion Capital of Ashoka, now India's national emblem.

In the evening, transfer to the railway station and board an overnight train bound for Delhi. Settle into your sleeper cabin as the train pulls out of Varanasi, and enjoy the gentle rhythm of overnight travel across the plains of northern India. This traditional mode of transport offers a fitting end to your journey, giving you time to reflect on the experiences and encounters of the past ten days.

  • Arrive in Delhi this morning as your overnight train pulls into the station. After disembarking, you’ll be met and transferred to the airport for your international departure, or to connect with an onward domestic flight if you're continuing your travels within India.

Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for a short rest at a nearby hotel or a final cup of chai before your journey continues. Whether you're heading home or exploring another part of the country, your time in North India comes to a close with a rich collection of memories.
