Itinerary

  • Welcome to Delhi! You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Delhi is a fascinating city of two parts - the old and the new. Old Delhi still retains its medieval character to a great extent; while New Delhi - with the exception of the area around the parliament and presidential house - is like any other modern city with tall buildings and shopping malls.

  • Explore some of Delhi’s most iconic landmarks, beginning with a visit to Humayun’s Tomb, a magnificent Mughal-era mausoleum that inspired the design of the Taj Mahal. Continue to Qutab Minar, the world’s tallest brick minaret, surrounded by ancient ruins that reflect Delhi’s layered history. In New Delhi, admire the grand architecture of Lutyens’ Delhi, including the Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the imposing India Gate, a war memorial honouring Indian soldiers.

In Old Delhi, step into the city’s vibrant past as you walk through bustling bazaars and markets, where the scent of spices, the sound of traders calling out, and the colourful stalls create an unforgettable atmosphere. Visit the Jama Masjid, one of India’s largest mosques, with its towering minarets and expansive courtyard offering a glimpse into Delhi’s medieval grandeur.

We can tailor the day’s itinerary to match your interests and energy levels, ensuring a personalised experience that allows you to explore Delhi’s rich history, culture, and architectural wonders at your own pace.

  • Take an early morning flight to Leh, the gateway to Ladakh, a region perched on the western edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Flanked by the Karakoram mountain range to the north and the Himalayas to the south, Ladakh’s dramatic landscapes are unlike anywhere else in India. Upon arrival at Leh Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel, where you can settle in and begin adjusting to the high altitude.

At 3,500 metres above sea level, it’s important to take the day to acclimatise, allowing your body time to adjust to the thinner air. Resting, staying hydrated, and moving at a slow pace will help ease the transition. As the day progresses, take in the surroundings of Leh, a city where Buddhist monasteries, traditional Ladakhi homes, and rugged mountain peaks create an unforgettable setting.

In the evening, take a short excursion to the Shanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda), a striking white-domed monument built by Japanese Buddhist monks to promote peace and harmony. Perched on a hilltop overlooking Leh, the stupa offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Indus Valley and surrounding mountains, particularly at sunset when the golden light bathes the landscape in a warm glow.

  • This morning, set out to explore Leh, a fascinating high-altitude town nestled in a fertile valley, surrounded by rugged barren mountains and distant snow-capped peaks. At an elevation of 3,500 metres, Leh is a place of striking contrasts - a remote Himalayan settlement that was once a thriving hub for traders journeying along the ancient Silk Road. Its strategic location brought together merchants from Tibet, Kashmir, Central Asia, and beyond, making it a centre of cultural exchange. Today, the town retains its vibrant atmosphere, with a mix of Buddhist monks, Ladakhi locals, and visitors from across the world filling its narrow streets.

Begin your exploration at Leh Palace, an impressive nine-storey structure that dominates the town’s skyline. Built in the 17th century in the grand Tibetan style, the palace was once home to Ladakh’s royal family before they were forced to flee during conflicts with neighbouring forces. Though weathered by time, its wooden balconies, intricately carved windows, and labyrinthine corridors still exude the grandeur of the past. Climb to the upper levels for panoramic views over Leh’s rooftops, with the Indus Valley stretching towards the distant mountains.

Afterwards, take a stroll through Leh’s bustling bazaars, where the town’s rich history as a trading post is still evident. Wander through market stalls selling handwoven pashmina shawls, turquoise-encrusted jewellery, prayer flags, and Tibetan antiques. The streets are lined with small tea houses and bakeries, where you can stop for a cup of butter tea or a warm Ladakhi barley bread. As you take in the colours, scents, and sounds of Leh, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for this unique Himalayan town, where ancient traditions and modern influences continue to coexist.

  • Today, explore some of Ladakh’s most significant monasteries and cultural landmarks, including Hemis, Thiksey, and Stok Palace. These sites offer a deep insight into the region’s Buddhist heritage, royal history, and traditional way of life, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Himalayan landscape.

Begin at Thiksey Monastery, one of Ladakh’s largest and most architecturally striking monastic complexes. Perched on a hillside, this 12-storey monastery is often compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, due to its tiered structure and impressive scale. Inside, discover an extraordinary collection of Buddhist art, including intricately painted thangkas, statues, ancient manuscripts, and ceremonial swords. One of its most striking features is the Maitreya Buddha, a 15-metre-high golden statue housed in a dedicated temple within the monastery. As you wander through its prayer halls, courtyards, and meditation chambers, you’ll witness monks engaged in their daily rituals, offering a glimpse into the spiritual traditions that have shaped Ladakh for centuries.

Continue to Hemis Monastery, one of Ladakh’s wealthiest and most influential monasteries. Tucked into a secluded valley, Hemis is renowned for its vast collection of sacred relics, intricate murals, and gilded statues, as well as for hosting the Hemis Festival, one of the most vibrant religious celebrations in the region. Its hidden location adds to its mystique, and its historical significance makes it a must-visit site.

Later, visit Stok Palace, the former residence of the Namgyal dynasty, Ladakh’s royal family. Built in the early 19th century, this beautifully preserved palace still houses the descendants of Ladakh’s former rulers and offers a fascinating look into the region’s royal past. The palace museum showcases a collection of jewellery, regal attire, religious artifacts, and ceremonial masks, providing insight into Ladakh’s aristocratic traditions. Take a moment to pause along the palace walls, where you can enjoy a cup of tea while taking in the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

After a full day of exploration, return to Leh, where the evening is yours to spend at leisure - perhaps relaxing at your hotel, visiting a local café, or simply reflecting on the incredible sights of the day.

  • After breakfast, set out on a full-day excursion from Leh, visiting the village of Alchi and its centuries-old monastery, as well as the remarkable monastic sites of Likir, Basgo, and Ridzong. The journey takes you through some of Ladakh’s most spectacular high-altitude mountain roads, winding through narrow passes and deep valleys along the Indus River, with breathtaking views at every turn.

Your first stop is Likir Monastery, which translates to “circled by water spirits” and is picturesquely perched on a hill near the Indus River, close to the village of Saspol. Established in 1065 by Lama Duwang Chosje, it belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is a treasure trove of ancient manuscripts and thangkas. The most striking feature is the 23-metre-high gilded gold statue of Maitreya Buddha, sitting atop the monastery roof, which was completed in 1999 and gleams brilliantly against the rugged mountain backdrop.

Next, visit Basgo Monastery, constructed in 1680 on a dramatic hilltop, overlooking the ruins of an ancient town that was once a major political and cultural centre. The monastery houses a two-storey golden statue of Maitreya Buddha inside its Maitreya Temple, which also features impressive murals of fierce guardian deities that once protected the ruling royal family. The monastery’s strategic location and stunning views make it a fascinating place to explore.

Continue to Ridzong Monastery, another Gelugpa monastery, dramatically located at the top of a rocky side valley north of the Indus River. Founded in 1831 by Lama Tsultim Nima, it is sometimes referred to as “the paradise for meditation”, as it is known for its strict discipline and monastic order. Home to around 40 monks, it maintains an austere environment, emphasising deep study and meditation. While here, you can also visit the nearby Thardot Choeling Nunnery, where Buddhist nuns follow a similarly disciplined spiritual path.

Arriving in Alchi, visit Alchi Monastery, one of Ladakh’s oldest and most unique monastic sites, dating back to the 11th century. Unlike other Ladakhi monasteries that predominantly follow Tibetan artistic traditions, Alchi reflects a strong Kashmiri influence, evident in its vibrant murals, elaborate wooden carvings, and intricate frescoes. The assembly hall features a golden statue of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Unlike many other monasteries in Ladakh, Alchi is no longer an active religious centre and is instead maintained by monks from Likir Monastery, preserving its cultural and artistic heritage.

After a day of exploring some of Ladakh’s most fascinating Buddhist sites, return to Leh, reflecting on the region’s deep spiritual traditions and centuries-old artistic legacy.

  • Begin your journey with a five-hour drive to Nubra Valley, travelling along Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable roads at 5,600 metres. This legendary pass serves as the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys and has played an important role in history. Once a key route along the ancient caravan trade network, Khardung La was a vital link between Leh and Central Asia, acting as a feeder route for the famous Silk Road. In its prime, the pass saw nearly 10,000 horses and camels travelling through each year, carrying goods between the Himalayas and beyond. Even today, remnants of this history remain, with a small population of Bactrian camels - descendants of the animals once used for trade - found in Hunder, an area often referred to as the ‘Land of the Sand Dunes’.

Crossing Khardung La, descend into Nubra Valley, known locally as ‘Ldumra’ or ‘The Valley of Flowers’. Tucked between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges of the Himalayas, the valley is a place of striking contrasts, where lush greenery and orchards thrive alongside rocky mountains and golden sand dunes. Nubra is best known for its double-humped Bactrian camels, a rare species found in only a few parts of the world.

On arrival, check in to your accommodation and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure, taking in the breathtaking surroundings. Your two-night stay in Nubra will be at a luxury tented camp, offering a high-end glamping experience in the Himalayan wilderness. Each spacious tented suite is elegantly furnished, featuring private modern amenities, a verandah, and comfortable interiors that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. With exceptional service, gourmet meals, and a peaceful retreat in one of the most scenic regions of Ladakh, this stay promises to be an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Himalayas.

  • Spend the day exploring two of Nubra Valley’s most significant monasteries - Diskit and Samstangling, each offering a glimpse into the region’s deep-rooted Buddhist traditions and stunning Himalayan settings.

Begin at Diskit Monastery, one of the oldest and most photogenic monasteries in Ladakh, founded in the 14th century. Belonging to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the monastery is perched dramatically on a rocky hillside, offering breathtaking views over the Shyok River Valley. To reach its prayer halls, ascend a flight of stone steps, where you’ll find an awe-inspiring statue of Maitreya Buddha, a huge ceremonial drum, and thangkas depicting fierce guardian deities. The monastery’s unique setting and historic relics make it a fascinating place to explore.

Continue to Samstangling Monastery, founded in 1841 by Lama Tsultim Nima. Nestled just above the picturesque village of Sumer, this monastery stands out with its vibrant hues of gold, red ochre, and white. A red stone staircase, lined with fluttering prayer flags, leads to its entrance, creating a striking contrast against the mountainous backdrop. Inside, the assembly halls are adorned with elaborate murals and paintings, depicting Buddha, the Dharma Wheel, the Four Heavenly Kings, and other important Buddhist symbols. Around 100 monks reside here, including the recently discovered reincarnation of Lama Bakula Rinpoche, who, despite being just eight years old, solemnly greets devotees and blesses them with sacred threads tied around their wrists.

In the afternoon, experience a memorable camel ride on Nubra’s famous double-humped Bactrian camels, a rare species that once carried traders along the ancient Silk Route. Ride across the sand dunes of Hunder, set against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks, a surreal and unique landscape found in few places on earth.

Afterwards, return to your luxury tented accommodation, where you can unwind and enjoy the on-site facilities, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the day.

  • After a relaxed breakfast, begin the scenic drive back to Leh, retracing the breathtaking mountain landscapes of Nubra Valley. Enjoy the changing vistas as you ascend through high-altitude passes and follow the winding roads back towards the Indus Valley.

On arrival in Leh, check in to your accommodation and take the evening at leisure. You may choose to unwind at your hotel, take a stroll through the local markets, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this Himalayan town.

  • Enjoy a full day at leisure in Leh, making the most of your final moments in Ladakh as your journey nears its conclusion. This is the perfect opportunity to explore at your own pace, revisit favourite spots, or simply soak up the atmosphere of this Himalayan town.

You may wish to head back to Leh’s main market, where you can wander through small handicraft and souvenir shops, picking up locally made textiles, jewellery, or Tibetan artefacts to take home as mementos of your trip. A stroll along Leh’s central promenade offers a chance to admire the town’s unique blend of traditional Ladakhi architecture and modern influences, with locals and travellers alike going about their day.

In the late afternoon, you might like to unwind at one of Leh’s many cafés and restaurants, some of which boast spectacular views over the town. With the Leh Monastery and surrounding mountain ranges forming a stunning backdrop, this is the perfect setting to relax, reflect on your travels, and enjoy a warm cup of chai or a local Ladakhi dish before your journey comes to an end.

  • Your journey through Ladakh comes to an end today. You will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Leh Airport for your flight to Delhi.

On arrival in Delhi, you may continue with your India travels or connect to your international departure flight. If you’d like to explore more of India, consider extending your trip with a private tour of Rajasthan, where you can discover majestic palaces, historic forts, and vibrant cultural experiences.
