After breakfast, set out on a full-day excursion from Leh, visiting the village of Alchi and its centuries-old monastery, as well as the remarkable monastic sites of Likir, Basgo, and Ridzong. The journey takes you through some of Ladakh’s most spectacular high-altitude mountain roads, winding through narrow passes and deep valleys along the Indus River, with breathtaking views at every turn.

Your first stop is Likir Monastery, which translates to “circled by water spirits” and is picturesquely perched on a hill near the Indus River, close to the village of Saspol. Established in 1065 by Lama Duwang Chosje, it belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is a treasure trove of ancient manuscripts and thangkas. The most striking feature is the 23-metre-high gilded gold statue of Maitreya Buddha, sitting atop the monastery roof, which was completed in 1999 and gleams brilliantly against the rugged mountain backdrop.
