Luxury Train Itinerary
-
Welcome aboard the Deccan Odyssey. Arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in the late afternoon, meeting the crew at around 3.30pm for check-in and registration for the Maharashtra Wild Trail. A traditional welcome sets the tone as staff offer a drink and assist with formalities while your luggage is taken to your cabin. The historic station building, with its Gothic architecture and busy platforms, adds a sense of occasion to your departure.
Once on board, settle into your cabin and take a moment to get acquainted with the train. The Deccan Odyssey is made up of 21 coaches, including ten passenger cars with four cabins in each, two presidential suite cars, two restaurant cars, a bar, a spa and a conference coach. Generator and staff coaches operate behind the scenes to support the journey. With capacity for only 88 guests, the train feels spacious and unhurried. Cabins offer private bathrooms, climate control, a safe, a direct dial phone and round-the-clock valet service.
The train departs Mumbai at 4.40pm, moving past the old stone platforms before slipping into the suburbs and then the open countryside. The early part of the journey is well suited to exploring the train’s shared spaces or simply watching the city gradually give way to the plains of Maharashtra. The change of pace is immediate, and the steady movement of the train sets the rhythm for the week ahead.
Dinner is served after nightfall, with menus reflecting the high standard of dining that continues throughout the journey. Later, relax in the bar or retire to your cabin as the Deccan Odyssey continues northeast towards Aurangabad, the gateway to the Ellora Caves.
-
The Deccan Odyssey arrives in Aurangabad this morning while breakfast is served on board. The city, named after Aurangzeb, developed as a key Mughal centre and still shows that history in its gateways, water systems and surviving charbagh style gardens. Its position on old trade routes made it an important stop for merchants, craftspeople and soldiers, leaving the area with a blend of influences that stretch from the Deccan plateau to the far north of the empire.
The morning is at leisure on the train, giving time to settle into the day while the city comes to life outside. Some travellers choose to remain on board and relax; others may wish to take a massage at a nearby hotel spa before returning for an early lunch. Aurangabad’s outskirts reveal a landscape shaped by black basalt, scattered farms and the low ridges that define this part of Maharashtra.
In the early afternoon, travel to the Ellora Caves, one of India’s most significant archaeological sites. Set along a basalt escarpment around 30km from the city, the complex features 34 caves carved between the fourth and tenth centuries. The Buddhist monasteries at the southern end show multi storey living quarters and prayer halls, the Hindu temples include the immense Kailasa temple cut from a single piece of rock, and the Jain shrines at the northern end highlight the artistic variety of the region. The setting is dramatic, with the cliff face forming a natural backdrop to the long line of excavated spaces.
Continue to Daulatabad Fort, a hilltop citadel with layers of occupation stretching back more than two millennia. The climb passes through massive gates, angled walls and old defence corridors designed to slow invaders. At the top, the views extend over fields, dry hills and the old caravan routes that once linked the region to the wider Deccan. The site also contains remains of early Buddhist cave excavations connected to the same cultural world as Ajanta and Ellora.
Return to the Deccan Odyssey to freshen up before heading back into Aurangabad for dinner. The evening ends at a relaxed pace before the train prepares for the next leg of the journey.
-
After a relaxed breakfast, head into the Old City of Aurangabad to explore one of its most noted Mughal landmarks. Begin at Bibi-ka-Maqbara, the mausoleum built for Dilras Banu, wife of Aurangzeb. Constructed between 1651 and 1661 by their son Prince Azam Shah, it was modelled on the Taj Mahal and is often called the Taj of the Deccan. Its long water channels, formal garden layout and white limestone plaster make it a distinctive example of Mughal architecture in the Deccan region.
Continue to a workshop specialising in Himroo weaving, a craft that has shaped Aurangabad’s identity since the fourteenth century. The fabric blends Persian influenced motifs with cotton and silk threads and once held a place of prestige in royal courts. The weaving process remains labour intensive, and watching the looms in motion offers insight into the skill required to produce intricate patterns and textures that link back to the older Kum Khwab fabrics of earlier eras.
Return to the Deccan Odyssey in time for lunch. The train departs Aurangabad at around 1.00pm, beginning its run towards Ramtek, the gateway station for Pench National Park. The afternoon unfolds at an easy pace as the view shifts from the outskirts of Aurangabad to open farmland, low hills and small settlements. This part of the journey is well suited to spending time in your cabin, reading in the lounge or visiting the spa.
As evening approaches, settle into the bar for a drink before dinner is served. The relaxed atmosphere carries through the night as the Deccan Odyssey continues deeper into central India in preparation for your wildlife experience the following day.
-
Wake before sunrise as the Deccan Odyssey reaches Ramtek, the access point for Pench National Park. Named after the Pench River, which winds through the forest and divides it almost evenly, the park is one of central India’s most important wildlife habitats. Its landscape shifts between gentle hills, seasonal streams, dense woodland and open meadows, creating conditions that support a wide range of plant and animal life. The early morning light is ideal for viewing the forest at its most active.
Begin the day with a game drive through Pench, travelling through forest that inspired elements of Kipling’s Jungle Book. Wildlife sightings vary by season but the park is known for its healthy populations of deer, gaur, wild dogs and leopards. The mixed terrain makes each section feel different, and the calm of the early hours allows time to absorb the atmosphere of the forest. After the drive, return to the Deccan Odyssey for a late brunch and some time to relax.
In the afternoon, head back into the park for a second drive through a different part of the reserve. Pench contains several forest types ranging from teak woodland to mixed scrub, each home to its own species. The birdlife is a highlight, with Malabar pied hornbills, Indian pittas, ospreys, white eyed buzzards, storks, waterfowl and four endangered vulture species frequently recorded here. The State Bird of Maharashtra, the green pigeon, is often seen in the higher branches of fruiting trees.
After your afternoon safari, return to Ramtek to rejoin the Deccan Odyssey. As the sun sets, settle back on board for dinner while the train prepares to depart for Tadoba, one of India’s best known tiger reserves. The evening remains unhurried as the train begins its journey deeper into Central India.
-
Wake before sunrise as the Deccan Odyssey arrives at Chandrapur, the gateway to Tadoba Tiger Reserve. Tadoba is one of India’s oldest and most respected wildlife sanctuaries and is often referred to as the “land of tigers” due to its strong population. The reserve combines dense bamboo stands, patches of teak, meadows and waterholes, creating ideal conditions for spotting tigers as they move through their territory in the early hours of the day.
Begin your morning safari with the soft first light across the forest. While tigers are the main attraction, Tadoba is also known for regular sightings of wild dogs, leopards, sloth bears and gaur, as well as smaller species such as the rusty spotted cat and ratel. Herds of deer, sambar and wild pigs are common throughout the reserve, and the birdlife ranges from raptors to brilliantly coloured forest species. The varied terrain ensures each section of the drive offers something distinct.
After the safari, enjoy a late breakfast at the Tiger Trails Lodge. This is followed by time to rest, watch a wildlife documentary or speak with the lodge naturalist to learn more about Tadoba’s conservation efforts. Lunch at the lodge provides a relaxed break in the middle of the day before returning to Chandrapur Station to rejoin the Deccan Odyssey.
Once back on board, settle in for the evening as the train begins its journey towards Jalgaon. Cocktails in the bar offer a pleasant way to unwind before dinner is served, and the steady movement of the train sets the tone for a restful night. The route continues across central Maharashtra as the Deccan Odyssey prepares for the next day’s visit to the Ajanta Caves.
-
The Deccan Odyssey arrives at Pachora this morning, where you disembark after breakfast for the drive to the Ajanta Caves. Set in a steep horseshoe shaped gorge, this World Heritage site contains 30 rock cut Buddhist caves dating from the second century BCE to the sixth century CE. Monasteries, prayer halls and sculpted facades line the cliff, while inside, the surviving murals tell stories from the life of the Buddha and illustrate scenes of daily life, trade, devotion and courtly culture from early India.
Spend the morning exploring the caves at a steady pace, noticing the differences in style between the older, simpler excavations and the later, more elaborate halls. The richly coloured paintings, created with natural pigments, are among the oldest surviving murals in Asia, and the sense of being inside a living monastic complex is still strong despite the centuries that have passed.
Return to the Deccan Odyssey for lunch as the train begins its journey towards Nashik. The afternoon is at leisure, with time to rest in your cabin or enjoy activities on board. Some travellers choose to join a carrom lesson, others visit the spa or watch a film in one of the shared spaces. This middle section of the journey is deliberately unhurried, offering a break after several days of early starts.
As the countryside settles into late afternoon light, relax in the bar with a drink before dinner is served. The train continues its route across northern Maharashtra, heading towards Nashik for the next day’s excursions.
-
The Deccan Odyssey arrives in Nashik this morning, one of Maharashtra’s oldest cities and an important centre of pilgrimage, agriculture and winemaking. Begin with a walk along the Godavari Ghats, where small temples line the river and daily rituals unfold on the steps leading down to the water. The area is a focal point of local life, with vendors, priests, pilgrims and residents creating a lively but grounded atmosphere in the early hours.
From the riverfront, travel into Nashik’s countryside to visit a vineyard in the surrounding hills. The region is known for its temperate climate and volcanic soil, both well suited to growing wine grapes. A guided tour offers insight into the development of India’s modern wine industry and the techniques used to cultivate and process local varietals.
A tasting follows the tour, with a selection of wines that reflect the character of the Nashik Valley. Lunch is served at the vineyard, allowing time to enjoy the views of rolling farmland and orchards that define this part of Maharashtra. The slower rhythm of the day contrasts with the wildlife focused pace of the previous two days.
Return to the Deccan Odyssey in the late afternoon to relax before dinner. The train departs Nashik at around 8.00pm, beginning the final stretch of the journey back towards Mumbai. Settle into the bar or your cabin as the train continues through the night.
-
The Deccan Odyssey reaches Mumbai early this morning as breakfast is served on board. The city comes into view gradually, with suburban stations and morning commuters signalling your return to one of India’s busiest gateways. The familiar outline of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus appears as the train approaches its final platform.
After breakfast, disembark at the station and step back into the energy of Mumbai. Station staff assist with luggage as you make your way through the concourse, where the movement of travellers and the rhythm of local trains contrast with the calm of the journey you’ve just completed.
Take a moment to reflect on the week of travel across Maharashtra, from ancient cave temples to national parks, riverfronts and vineyards. Each day has shown a different side of the region, shaped by its history, wildlife and landscapes. Bid farewell to the Deccan Odyssey and its crew as your journey comes to an end, marking the close of a memorable passage through Central India.
