Itinerary

  • Welcome to India! Arrive at Jorhat Airport and travel by road for around an hour to reach Neamati Ghat, the embarkation point for your river cruise. Alternatively, fly into Dibrugarh, a provincial town once used as a major American base during the Second World War, and take a scenic four-hour drive to Neamati Ghat. On arrival, board your ship and meet the friendly local crew who will accompany you on your Brahmaputra River voyage. Settle into your cabin and spend your first evening soaking in the atmosphere of Assam - its people, culture, and the wide, shifting waters of the Brahmaputra. As the sun sets over the river, enjoy your first taste of life on board and begin to get a feel for the journey ahead.

  • Your first excursion offers a fascinating glimpse into the cultural richness that lines the Brahmaputra, beginning with a visit to Sibsagar - once the capital of the Ahom kings. The Ahoms, originally of Shan origin from present-day Myanmar, ruled Assam for nearly 600 years until the mid-19th century. Over time, they embraced Hinduism and left behind a remarkable legacy of architecture, culture, and engineering that continues to shape the region’s identity today.

Sibsagar reflects this unique blend of Indian and Southeast Asian influences, seen in its distinctive temples with stupa-like domes and elegant palace structures. One of the architectural highlights, recently recognised with UNESCO World Heritage status, stands as a testament to the Ahoms' innovation. You’ll also visit a vast temple tank - thought to be the largest hand-excavated reservoir in the world - which showcases the advanced civil engineering of the period.

Following your visit, return to the ship and continue cruising downstream towards Majuli Island, one of the largest inhabited river islands in the world. In the afternoon, head ashore to explore a riverside village on the island and gain your first insight into this region’s unique rhythm of life.

  • Majuli Island, often photographed but rarely explored in depth, offers a striking window into the heart of Assamese culture. Set in the middle of the Brahmaputra, it is one of the world’s largest river islands and serves as a cultural and spiritual centre for the neo-Vaishnavite movement - a peaceful, reformist branch of Hinduism that has shaped the island’s identity since the 15th century.

Majuli is home to numerous satras, or monastic centres, where celibate monks lead a life of simplicity and devotion. These satras are not only spiritual hubs but also custodians of Assamese art, music, and storytelling traditions. The monks practise and perform gayan-bayan - ritual music with traditional instruments - alongside expressive dance-dramas and the recitation of sacred texts, preserving a living heritage passed down through generations.

During your visit, you'll explore Auniati Satra, known for its museum housing a fascinating mix of religious artefacts, manuscripts, and everyday items that reflect local history. Afterwards, you’ll attend a traditional dance performance at Kamalabari Satra, offering an intimate look at the island’s devotional artistry. Later, return to the ship and resume your cruise downstream through the changing landscapes of Assam.

  • Today is a leisurely one, spent mostly sailing downstream along the wide, shifting waters of the Brahmaputra. As the ship glides through the landscape, you’ll take in scenes of rural Assam - small villages tucked along the banks, farmers working in fields, and fishermen casting nets from simple wooden boats. The pace is unhurried, offering ample time to relax on deck and absorb the atmosphere of life along the river.

Midway through the day, you’ll go ashore for a short visit to a riverside village, where you’ll have the chance to engage with locals and gain a deeper appreciation for the rhythms of everyday life in this part of the world.

By afternoon, the landscape begins to change. To your left lies the edge of Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of India’s most renowned wildlife reserves. Keep your eyes on the riverbanks - wild elephants are often seen grazing along the fringes, and with a bit of luck, you might even spot a tiger in the undergrowth. It’s a quiet yet thrilling stretch of the journey as you drift past one of the subcontinent’s richest natural habitats, before arriving near the town of Biswanath late this evening.

  • This morning, you’ll arrive at the riverside town of Biswanath, often referred to as the ‘Varanasi of the East’. Known for its collection of Ahom-era temples, the town offers a glimpse into Assam’s spiritual and architectural heritage. Step ashore for a relaxed walk through the temple precincts and surrounding village. The local markets - held weekly - buzz with activity and colour, providing a chance to see the region’s rural economy in action, from fresh produce and handmade goods to everyday wares.

After exploring Biswanath, the ship continues downstream to Silghat, a quiet mooring nestled between the river and jungle. The air here is thick with birdsong, and you may spot clouds of butterflies fluttering through the undergrowth - a gentle prelude to the wilder encounters that await.

Later in the day, head out on your first safari in Kaziranga National Park. Travelling by jeep, you’ll venture into the Burapahar Range, an area of dense woodlands, open grasslands, and freshwater wetlands. This part of the park is rich in wildlife, and you may come across wild elephants, deer, and a host of birdlife, all set against a backdrop of thick forest and open plains. It’s a stirring introduction to one of India’s most important conservation areas.

  • This morning, you’ll set out by road for a jeep safari in Kaziranga National Park’s Central Range - one of its most wildlife-rich zones. The early start gives you the best chance of seeing the park’s more elusive animals as the forest comes to life.

Spanning over 1,000 square kilometres, Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of India’s most celebrated national parks. It's best known for sheltering the world’s largest population of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, but it’s also home to Indian Wild Water Buffalo, swamp deer, Indian bison, and healthy populations of wild elephants. Perhaps most remarkably, Kaziranga has the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers of any protected area in the world, making it a key stronghold for the species.

With its expansive floodplains, reed-covered wetlands, and tall elephant grass, the park is also a haven for birdlife. You may spot raptors such as the Oriental Honey Buzzard, White-tailed Eagle, and Himalayan Griffon, among many others that thrive in this diverse habitat. It’s no surprise that Kaziranga is often compared to Africa’s Serengeti in terms of wildlife density and variety.

After your morning safari, enjoy a relaxed riverside lunch at Diphlu River Lodge, an award-winning eco-retreat known for its sustainable practices and close ties to the local community. It’s a chance to experience the warmth and resilience of the people who call this extraordinary region home.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll return to the park for another jeep safari - this time in the Western Range. This area is known for its open grasslands and water bodies, offering a fresh perspective on Kaziranga’s vast and varied terrain.

  • This morning, you’ll visit a picturesque Assam tea plantation, where you can walk among the rows of tea bushes and learn about the growing, picking and processing of one of the world’s most recognisable teas. It’s also a chance to understand the rhythms of plantation life and the work that goes into each batch of Assam’s bold, flavourful brew.

After the visit, the cruise continues downstream beneath the sweeping span of the Kolia Bhomora Bridge, one of the longest in the region, before arriving at the riverside town of Tezpur. Rich in legend and layered history, Tezpur offers a fascinating blend of the old and the everyday.

Following lunch on board, head into town using local battery operated rickshaws, a fun and informal way to weave through the lively streets. The ride takes you past bustling markets and local shops before arriving at Cole Park, a well-kept garden with a striking collection of medieval stone carvings.

You’ll then walk to the nearby ruins of the Da Parbatia temple, where an ornately carved doorway dating back to the 6th century still stands. Its detail and craftsmanship reflect the region’s long history and enduring cultural influences.

  • After an early breakfast, set off on a scenic drive of around an hour to reach Nameri National Park, located at the base of the Eastern Himalayas. This remarkable stretch of wilderness plays multiple roles - it is a national park, a tiger and elephant reserve, and a designated Important Bird Area. Bordering the Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh, Nameri forms part of a vast corridor of semi-evergreen and evergreen forest that supports a wide range of plant and animal life.

On arrival, you’ll step into a quieter, wilder part of Assam. The park’s forested landscape is crisscrossed by clear rivers, and your visit includes a peaceful two-hour float trip down the Jia-Bhoreli River. Drifting slowly along this waterway, you’ll pass through thick jungle and open stretches of gravel banks, all while enjoying one of the best birdwatching experiences in the region. With a bit of luck, you may spot species like the Great Hornbill or White-winged Duck, and it’s not uncommon to see wild elephants or other animals along the banks.

After your time in the park, return to the ship in time for lunch. The cruise resumes in the afternoon, gliding further downstream through the shifting channels and untouched beauty that define this part of the Brahmaputra valley.

  • Today is spent entirely on the river, offering time to unwind and take in the ever-changing landscape of the Brahmaputra. As the ship moves downstream, you’ll pass through a vast stretch of braided channels and sandbars that form a distinctive part of the river’s character. These shifting sand islands, pale and windswept, create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly - quiet, open, and seemingly untouched.

The day’s journey brings a sense of stillness and space, broken occasionally by birdlife overhead or a passing fishing boat in the distance. It’s a chance to watch the river’s rhythms unfold and to reflect on the journey so far.

Along the way, you’ll stop at a riverside village, where you’ll get a glimpse into local life shaped by the river’s presence. Walk through narrow lanes, exchange smiles with villagers, and take in the practical simplicity of homes built to endure the changing seasons.

By late afternoon, the ship approaches a low range of hills that signals your approach to Guwahati. You’ll moor for the night near Sualkuchi, a town known for its traditional silk weaving and close connection to the river. As the sun dips behind the hills, enjoy a quiet evening on board, with the soft sounds of the river surrounding you.

  • This morning, step ashore in Sualkuchi, a lively riverside town known as the heart of Assam’s silk weaving tradition. Often called the ‘Manchester of the East’, Sualkuchi is where centuries-old techniques continue to thrive in family homes and small workshops. Mahatma Gandhi once remarked that “Assamese women weave dreams on looms,” and as you explore the town, it’s easy to see why.

Take a walk through its narrow lanes, where the rhythmic clatter of looms echoes from nearly every house. Here, weaving is more than a craft - it’s a way of life passed down through generations. You'll have the chance to observe the full process of silk production, from the rearing of silkworms and cocoon spinning to the hand-weaving of mekhela chadars, the elegant two-piece garments worn by Assamese women. Watching skilled artisans - both men and women - transform raw silk into vibrant, intricate fabrics is both impressive and deeply rooted in the identity of the region.

After your visit, the ship continues upstream, passing beneath the towering Saraighat Bridge, before arriving at Guwahati. From the riverside, you'll travel by road up Nilachal Hill to visit the revered Kamakhya Temple. Dedicated to the Mother Goddess, this ancient Hindu temple is one of the most significant Shakti shrines in India. Known for its striking architecture and powerful spiritual presence, it draws pilgrims from across the subcontinent.

Take a gentle stroll around the temple’s outer complex and enjoy panoramic views over the Brahmaputra Valley. The day’s journey through Sualkuchi and Guwahati offers a rich mix of traditional artistry, cultural depth, and spiritual significance - an insightful way to round off your time in Assam.

  • This morning, enjoy a final breakfast on board as your Brahmaputra river cruise comes to a close. After disembarking, you’ll be transferred by road to Guwahati Airport for your onward flight.

As you leave the river behind, take a moment to reflect on the landscapes, wildlife, and communities you’ve encountered along the way - from remote river islands and ancient temples to tea estates and national parks. This journey through Assam offers not only remarkable sights but also a deeper connection to a region shaped by the steady flow of the Brahmaputra.
