Delhi - Ranthambhore National Park - Bundi - Kota - Bhainsorgarh - Bijaipur - Deogarh - Kumbalgarh - Udaipur - Dungapur - Ahmedabad
On the hunt for an offbeat Rajasthan tour without the crowds? James Tod arrived in India in 1799 as an officer of the British Raj. Over 22 years, he travelled and researched widely, eventually publishing “Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan” - one of the earliest studies of Rajasthan and a rich insight into its people and traditions. While Tod’s travels took him cross-country on elephant and horseback, we retrace his journey through eastern Rajasthan. Including visits to Bundi, Kota, Bhainsorgarh and Chittorgarh - all in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle - we will stay in many of the same palaces and forts, now splendidly restored heritage hotels. Tod’s seminal work offers us the perfect framework to explore these lesser-known parts of Rajasthan.
Trip Highlights
Wander through Bundi’s cobblestone laneways and bustling bazaars, where blue-and-whitewashed houses, intricate havelis, and vibrant street markets showcase the town’s rich heritage and traditional craftsmanship
Explore the historic grandeur of Bhainsorgarh Fort and Chittorgarh Fort, where Rajput grand palaces, towering gateways, and ancient temples showcase Rajasthan’s rich heritage and architectural brilliance
Embark on a safari in Ranthambhore National Park, where diverse landscapes, ancient ruins, and expert-guided trails offer the chance to spot Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, and more

Welcome to India! On arrival at Delhi International airport you will be met by our tour escort, transferred to the hotel and assisted with check-in. Delhi, India’s capital, is a colourful, busy, chaotic city of more than 14 million people - half of whom appear to have come to the airport for your arrival.
-
This morning, take a five-hour train journey to Sawai Madhopur, followed by a road transfer to Ranthambhore, bringing you to one of India’s most renowned wildlife reserves.
In the afternoon, set out on a scenic trek to Ranthambhore Fort, a 1,000-year-old Rajput stronghold perched 215 metres above the plains on a rocky cliff. From the ramparts, take in breathtaking panoramic views of the national park and its three shimmering lakes, where wildlife such as crocodiles, deer, and birds of prey can often be spotted.
-
Once the hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, Ranthambhore was declared a national park in 1980 and later became one of India’s Project Tiger reserves. Spanning 392km², it is considered one of the best places in India to spot Bengal tigers in the wild, offering visitors a chance to see these majestic predators in their natural habitat. The park is also home to leopards, sloth bears, jackals, marsh crocodiles, and a rich variety of birdlife, as well as diverse trees and plant species that thrive in its dry deciduous forests and open grasslands.
Today, head into the park on early morning and late afternoon game drives, exploring its rugged terrain, hidden waterholes, and ancient ruins, keeping watch for tigers on the prowl, deer grazing by the lakes, and birds soaring above the treetops.
-

Enjoy lunch at Umaid Bagh, a picturesque retreat overlooking the lake and the historic Sukh Niwas Palace. It was here that Rudyard Kipling found inspiration for his novel ‘Kim’, drawn to Bundi’s timeless beauty and regal charm.
-
After breakfast, take a short drive to Kota, a city known for its historic palaces and riverfront setting. Begin with a visit to the City Palace Museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into Kota’s royal past. The museum houses an impressive collection of Rajput miniature paintings, royal weapons, and antique artefacts, all set within the grand halls of the palace complex.
Afterwards, enjoy lunch at Umaid Bhawan Palace, a magnificent heritage hotel that seamlessly blends Rajput and Victorian architectural styles. With its lush green lawns, marble corridors, intricately painted ceilings, and elegant courtyards, the palace reflects the opulence of Rajasthan’s royal era. -
Departing Bijaipur, take a short drive to Chittorgarh, home to one of India’s most storied forts, dating back to the 8th century. This battle-scarred stronghold is deeply woven into Rajput history, symbolising valour, romance, and the warrior code of honour. Between AD 734 and AD 1567, Chittorgarh Fort endured three major sieges, each ending in defeat and the tragic practice of jauhar, where Rajput women self-immolated in a sacred fire rather than face capture.
Spend time exploring the fort’s architectural masterpieces, from towering gateways and intricate palaces to ornate temples and vast reservoirs, all standing as testaments to its glorious yet turbulent past. After taking in the fort’s grandeur and dramatic history, continue the journey to Deogarh, where more cultural and historical treasures await.

Continue to a tranquil lake, home to a variety of migratory birds, where you can unwind with refreshments by the water’s edge. As the sun sets over the lake, watch the sky transform with warm hues while the distant calls of birds signal the end of the day, creating a serene and memorable experience.

This remarkable collection showcases rare and exquisite crystal furnishings, including chandeliers, chairs, tables, and even a crystal bed, commissioned by Maharana Sajjan Singh in the 19th century but left unused for decades.
After lunch, embark on a two-hour drive to Dungarpur, known as the ‘City of Hills’, nestled among the rugged peaks of the Aravalli Mountains. This picturesque town, with its palaces, lakes, and tribal heritage, offers a serene retreat and a chance to experience a lesser-explored side of Rajasthan.
-
Today, visit the Old Palace, or Juna Mahal, a 13th-century fortress-like structure perched on a rocky peak 460 metres above sea level. This seven-storey palace, with its crenellated walls, turrets, and narrow passageways, was designed for defence and security, making it an imposing stronghold in its time.
