Our 8-day Hidden Treasures of Gujarat tour explores the spectacular vistas of this vibrant land in one of India’s most luxurious trains, the Deccan Odyssey.
The rolling sojourn takes you to the medieval capital of Vadodara and the Champer-Pavagadh Archaeological Park with its lush green landscape punctuated by forts, palaces mosques and temples. At Palitana visit the Jain temples perched atop sacred Mount Satrunjaya, and take a guided wildlife tour in search for Asiatic lions and wildlife at Gir National Park.
Located on the edge of the Thar Desert, experience a desert jeep safari through the scenic beauty of this white desert known as the Rann of Kutch – home to a huge population of Wild Ass. Gaze in wonder at the Ancient Jain and Buddhist cave temples near Nashik and discover Indian wines at Grover Zampa vineyards.
Day 1 Mumbai
To begin your train journey, you will be met and transferred to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai. You will be greeted with a warm traditional Indian welcome before boarding. The train’s attendants will then escort you to your luxury cabin.
Day 2 Vadodara
Vadodara is the cultural epicenter of Gujarat. Today you will visit Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park – renowned for its forts, palaces, mosques, tombs and temples which are dotted all over its lush green landscape. Later, you may wish to pamper yourself at the on-board spa, or enjoy a book from the train’s library in the lounge coach.
Day 3 Palitana
Why not begin the day with bed tea – something of an Indian tradition – the round the clock personal attendants will gladly bring it to you to help start your day. Later, disembark to visit the renowned Jain temples, which are located atop sacred Mount Satrunjaya. Amid the massive warren of white marble shrines and temples, you’ll encounter many devotees dressed in white.
Day 4 Gir National Park
Today’s activities include an early morning drive and guided wildlife tour of Gir National Park – the only habitat of the majestic Asiatic lions in India. The park is also a bird watcher’s paradise and home to other animals including the endangered Indian wolf, fox, jackals, wild cats, hyenas and wild boar. This afternoon relax and soak up the ambience aboard the Deccan Odyssey.
Day 5 Rann of Kutch
Begin today with a jeep safari into the marshy salt desert of the Rann of Kutch – located on the edge of the Thar Desert. Take in the scenic beauty of this white desert and visit the Wild Ass Sanctuary with its huge population of Indian Wild Ass and exquisite variety of birds. Later, visit the local villages and discover the distinct tribes of the Rann of Kutch. You may wish to relax in the train’s lounge coach before dinner.
Day 6 Patan
Consider asking for an Indian breakfast this morning, as you leisurely start the day in the dining cart, taking in the passing views from the window. Today you will discover Patan, a seldom-visited 8th century fortified town renowned for its forts, lakes and places of worship. Explore the town including the sandstone sun temple at Modhera and the World Heritage Site of Rani Ki Vav.
Day 7 Nashik
After breakfast, you will explore Nashik. Begin by visiting the ancient Jain and Buddhist cave temples at Pandavleni. Later, you will head to Grover Zampa vineyards, one of the many winemakers in the Nashik area, to sample a variety of wines made locally. Lunch will also be taken at the vineyard.
Day 8 Mumbai
Arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway station in Mumbai in the morning where your journey concludes.
