Itinerary

  • Welcome to India! You will be met on arrival at the airport, and transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.

  • Begin your exploration of Ahmedabad this morning, a city deeply connected to India’s independence movement. It was here that Mahatma Gandhi launched his historic Salt March, a pivotal moment in the fight for freedom.

Start with a visit to Sabarmati Ashram, Gandhi’s former residence, where you can learn about his life, philosophy, and the principles of non-violent resistance that shaped India’s struggle for independence. Walk through the serene ashram grounds, visit the museum showcasing rare photographs and personal letters, and gain insight into Gandhi’s vision for self-reliance and social change.

Continue to the Siddi Sayed Mosque, an architectural gem renowned for its exquisite stone lattice windows, particularly the iconic ‘Tree of Life’ jaali, a masterpiece of intricate carving that has become a symbol of Ahmedabad’s heritage.

In the evening, immerse yourself in the bustling energy of the Law Garden night market, a vibrant space packed with stalls selling handcrafted treasures from Kutch and Saurashtra. Browse through a dazzling array of embroidered textiles, mirror-work garments, intricate jewellery, and colourful home décor, as local artisans proudly display their craftsmanship. This lively marketplace is perfect for soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying local street food, and picking up unique souvenirs.

  • This morning, travel to Utelia, a quaint rural village where modern influences have barely made an impact, allowing it to retain a charmingly untouched way of life. Nestled in the countryside of Gujarat, Utelia is just 1.5 hours away from Ahmedabad but offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Indian village life. The pace is slow, the landscapes are peaceful, and the culture remains deeply rooted in age-old customs.

Unlike many towns that have rapidly modernised, Utelia has preserved its rustic simplicity, making it an appealing destination for those seeking a more traditional and immersive experience. The village is dotted with mud-brick houses, narrow winding lanes, and open courtyards, where locals go about their daily routines - herding cattle, weaving, cooking over open fires, and tending to their fields. Wandering through Utelia, you’ll see children playing outside simple homes, elders gathered under shady trees for long conversations, and artisans engaged in their craft, creating a scene that feels almost timeless.

Despite its modest appearance, Utelia has a strong sense of community, where hospitality is extended to every visitor. You may have the chance to interact with local families, learn about their way of life, and even observe traditional farming and handicraft techniques that have been passed down for generations. The village’s tranquil atmosphere and unspoiled beauty make it a perfect place to step away from the rush of city life and experience the peaceful simplicity of rural Gujarat.

  • Spend a full day at leisure exploring the charming village of Utelia, where history, culture, and rural life blend seamlessly. Whether you choose to wander through its narrow lanes, interact with the locals, or simply soak in the tranquil atmosphere, Utelia offers a unique window into Gujarat’s heritage and traditional village life.

The village was founded in 1786 by Bhav Sinhji, a member of the Vaghela Rajput clan, who once ruled over large parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Malwa, and Rewa. This proud warrior lineage shaped much of the region’s historical and architectural legacy, traces of which can still be seen in Utelia’s grand structures and noble past.

One of the village’s most remarkable landmarks is Palace Utelia, a striking Indo-Saracenic mansion built around the turn of the 20th century to replace an earlier wooden palace constructed by Nekamdar Thakore Saheb Sur Sinhji. The palace’s architectural grandeur is a blend of Indian and European influences, featuring five distinctive domes, pillared galleries, expansive balconies, and elegant porticos. Each element reflects the artistry and craftsmanship of the era, making it a symbol of the village’s aristocratic heritage.

As you explore, take in the village’s peaceful charm, where traditional homes, agricultural fields, and local markets paint a picture of rural Gujarat unchanged by time. Engage with friendly villagers, who continue to uphold age-old customs, from farming and pottery to weaving and folk storytelling. This leisurely day in Utelia offers a chance to step back in time, immersing yourself in a world where history and tradition still shape daily life.

  • Set out on a scenic 3 hour drive south to Palitana, a city famed for its awe-inspiring marble temples and considered one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Jains. Perched on the sacred Shatrunjaya Hill, Palitana’s extraordinary temple complex is one of the largest and most impressive in India, drawing thousands of devotees and visitors each year.

The temple complex is a testament to centuries of devotion and craftsmanship, having been built and expanded over a period of 900 years by successive generations of Jain patrons. The site consists of more than 900 intricately carved temples, each a masterpiece of marble architecture, radiating a sense of spiritual purity and artistic grandeur.

As you ascend the 3,800 stone steps leading to the summit, the temples reveal themselves in layers, ranging from small shrines carved into rock crevices and caves to magnificent domed sanctuaries adorned with golden spires and vibrant glass inlays. The gleaming white marble, set against the backdrop of blue skies and rolling hills, creates a truly breathtaking spectacle, making Palitana an unforgettable pilgrimage site and an architectural wonder.

While the climb is an integral part of the spiritual journey, those who prefer not to walk can opt for a palanquin (doli) carried by porters, allowing all visitors to experience the sacred beauty of the temple city. The summit offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, and for the faithful, reaching the top is a moment of deep reverence and spiritual fulfilment.

  • Begin the day with an early morning climb up Shatrunjaya Hill, home to one of the most sacred Jain temple complexes in the world. As you ascend the 3,800 stone steps, the breathtaking marble temples gradually come into view, illuminated by the soft morning light. The hilltop offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, making the spiritual and physical journey an unforgettable experience.

Later, drive to Gir National Park, a vast and peaceful wildlife sanctuary covering 35 square kilometres of savannah-like grasslands, dry scrub forests, and rocky hills. Best known as the last refuge of the Asiatic lion, Gir is the only place in the world outside Africa where lions roam freely in their natural habitat. Beyond its iconic lions, the park also boasts the world’s largest concentration of black bucks, a strikingly beautiful antelope species found in abundance across the landscape.

Gir is also home to a variety of other wildlife, including the endangered Indian wolf, wild cats, foxes, jackals, striped hyenas, and wild boar. For birdwatchers, the park offers a remarkable diversity of avian species, with rare sightings of houbara bustards, sarus cranes, white storks, common cranes, and white pelicans.

  • Today, set out on two game drives in Gir National Park - one at first light and another in the mid-afternoon, offering the best chances to spot wildlife in their natural habitat.

Gir is the only place in the world outside Africa where lions roam freely, and with a high density of these majestic big cats, the likelihood of seeing them is remarkably good. Keep your eyes peeled for lion prides resting in the shade, lionesses on the move with their cubs, or a dominant male patrolling his territory.

The park is also home to one of the largest leopard populations in India, making it an excellent location to spot these elusive predators. With a bit of luck, you may see a leopard stealthily perched on a tree branch or camouflaged against the rugged terrain.

  • Drive 3 hours to Gondal, the former royal capital of a small but influential princely state in Gujarat. This historic town, once ruled by the progressive and forward-thinking Maharajas of Gondal, is known for its well-preserved palaces, vibrant culture, and a deep-rooted respect for its royal lineage. Unlike many other princely states of India, Gondal flourished under a leadership that prioritised modernisation, education, and public welfare, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the town today.

One of the most revered figures in Gondal’s history is Maharajah Bhagwat Sinhji, a visionary ruler who introduced progressive reforms in education, healthcare, and town planning. Under his leadership, Gondal saw significant advancements in infrastructure, including the establishment of schools, hospitals, and administrative buildings, many of which still stand as testaments to his commitment to the well-being of his people. The respect and admiration for the royal family remain strong, as seen in the pride with which locals speak of their history and the way their heritage has been preserved.

As you explore Gondal, you’ll notice the town’s unique blend of old-world charm and progressive ideals. Stately palaces with intricate carvings, grand courtyards, and colonial influences reflect the architectural elegance of a bygone era, while the well-planned streets, public gardens, and civic institutions highlight the Maharaja’s dedication to modern governance. Whether visiting the Naulakha Palace, admiring the impressive royal car collection, or simply strolling through the town’s bustling markets, Gondal offers a glimpse into a princely past that continues to shape its present.

  • Begin your exploration of Gondal with a visit to the Naulakha Palace, the oldest surviving palace in the town, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of its princely past. Built in the 18th century, this stunning structure is a masterpiece of stone craftsmanship, featuring intricately carved balconies, delicate arches, and a fabulous pillared courtyard that speaks to the elegance of Rajput architecture. One of its most remarkable features is the ornate spiral staircase, a testament to the skill of the artisans who constructed it. As you wander through the lavishly decorated halls, admire the antique furniture, grand chandeliers, and vintage artefacts, all of which reflect the rich heritage of the Gondal royal family.

Continue to Khadi Plaza, a significant handloom weaving centre in Gujarat, dedicated to preserving the age-old traditions of Khadi fabric production. This centre plays an important role in sustaining local artisans and promoting eco-friendly, handmade textiles, which were once championed by Mahatma Gandhi as a symbol of self-reliance and independence. Here, you can observe skilled weavers at work, using traditional spinning and weaving techniques to create fine cotton and woollen textiles. If you're interested, you can also browse the collection of handwoven fabrics, scarves, and garments, which make for meaningful souvenirs that support local craftsmanship and sustainable fashion.

Time permitting, visit the Bhuvaneswari Ayurveda Pharmacy, a respected centre for traditional Indian medicine, where ancient Ayurvedic healing methods are still practised today. This pharmacy is closely tied to history, as it is believed that the father of the present owner was the one who bestowed the title of ‘Mahatma’ on Gandhi, recognising his leadership in India’s independence movement. Here, you can learn about age-old herbal remedies, the healing properties of Ayurveda, and how traditional medicine continues to thrive alongside modern healthcare practices.

  • This morning, depart from Gondal for Bhuj, a journey of approximately six hours by car, passing through the arid landscapes and rural villages of Gujarat as you make your way into the historic heart of the Kutch district. En route, observe local communities, traditional farmlands, and occasional herds of camels or cattle, reflecting the semi-nomadic lifestyle that has existed in this region for centuries.

Bhuj, the district headquarters of Kutch, is a walled city steeped in history, with a past that stretches back thousands of years. Its name is derived from the Bhujia Fortress, an imposing structure that once served as a defensive stronghold for the rulers of Kutch. The city is a fascinating blend of ancient ruins, colonial influences, and vibrant handicraft traditions, making it one of Gujarat’s most culturally rich and visually striking destinations.

Bhuj is renowned for its exceptional textile and handicraft traditions, particularly Kutch embroidery, famous for its intricate mirror work, bold geometric patterns, and vibrant colours. Artisans in and around the city specialise in a variety of traditional crafts, including bandhani (tie-dye), ajrakh block printing, leatherwork, and intricate Rogan painting, a rare art form that has been passed down through generations. Visiting local craft workshops offers a chance to see artisans at work and learn about the centuries-old techniques that have given Kutch its global reputation in textile artistry.

Beyond its rich handicraft heritage, Bhuj is home to intriguing historical sites, with links to the Indus Valley Civilisation, one of the world’s oldest urban cultures. The city has witnessed a dynamic past, influenced by Rajput rulers, Mughal emperors, British colonialists, and the devastating 2001 earthquake, which reshaped much of its landscape. Among Bhuj’s key attractions are the Aina Mahal (Palace of Mirrors), the Prag Mahal with its Italian-Gothic architecture, and the Hamirsar Lake, a peaceful spot where locals gather in the evenings.

Despite its historical significance and bustling markets, Bhuj retains a relaxed, small-town charm, offering a laid-back atmosphere where visitors can explore at their own pace. Whether wandering through old bazaars, visiting ancient palaces, or engaging with local artisans, Bhuj provides an immersive and enriching cultural experience that reflects the heritage and resilience of Kutch.

  • Spend the morning exploring the historic city of Bhuj, where centuries of royal heritage, artistic excellence, and architectural splendour come together. Begin with a visit to Aina Mahal, an 18th-century palace built in a distinctive Indo-European style, reflecting the opulence of the Jadeja rulers of Kutch. Designed by Ramsingh Malam, a craftsman trained in Europe, the palace features intricate mirror work, Venetian-style chandeliers, and gilded furnishings, giving it the name ‘Palace of Mirrors’. Wander through its lavishly decorated halls, marvelling at hand-painted ceilings, elaborate glasswork, and finely carved wooden doors, which showcase the fusion of Kutchi and European artistry.

Next, visit Prag Mahal, an imposing 19th-century palace built in Italian Gothic style, offering a striking contrast to the more traditional architecture of Bhuj. Constructed using sandstone and adorned with Corinthian pillars, the palace was designed by British architect Colonel Henry Saint Wilkins and remains one of the most unique palaces in Gujarat. Inside, explore the grand Durbar Hall, decorated with chandeliers and classical statues, before making your way up the 45-metre bell tower, where a panoramic view of Bhuj and the surrounding countryside awaits. From this vantage point, you can see the old city walls, bustling markets, and distant arid landscapes, providing a bird’s-eye perspective on Bhuj’s historic and cultural fabric.

In the afternoon, take a short drive to the Kala Raksha Trust Centre, an organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional textile arts of Kutch. This community-driven initiative works closely with local artisans, particularly women from rural villages, ensuring that their ancient embroidery and textile traditions continue to thrive in the modern world.

During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to observe artisans at work, meticulously stitching intricate patterns that tell stories of local folklore, daily life, and cultural heritage. The embroidery of Kutch is known worldwide for its exquisite detail, vibrant colours, and mirror inlays, with different tribal communities having their own distinctive styles and techniques. Engage with the artisans, learn about the history and significance of Kutchi embroidery, and perhaps even try your hand at a few stitches under their guidance. This visit not only provides a deeper appreciation for Gujarat’s artistic heritage but also highlights the importance of sustainable craft preservation and female empowerment in rural India.

  • This morning, set out on a two-hour drive from Bhuj to Mandvi, a historic coastal town on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Once a thriving fortified port, Mandvi played a crucial role in Gujarat’s maritime trade, with its 8-metre-high, 1.2-metre-wide walls protecting the town from invaders. Though much of the old fortifications have disappeared, Mandvi remains a bustling hub of trade, craftsmanship, and coastal life, where tradition and industry blend seamlessly.

One of the town’s most fascinating sights is its renowned shipbuilding yard, where skilled artisans construct massive wooden dhows by hand, using techniques passed down through generations. Here, hundreds of craftsmen work meticulously to create traditional sailing vessels, primarily for Arab merchants who still rely on these sturdy wooden boats for trade across the Indian Ocean. Watching these handcrafted ships take shape is a rare glimpse into a centuries-old maritime tradition, connecting Mandvi’s past as a prominent trading centre to its present-day craftsmanship.

Mandvi’s mild coastal climate and peaceful seaside charm made it the preferred summer retreat of the Maharaos of Kutch, the rulers of the region. The town’s heritage buildings, serene beaches, and relaxed atmosphere make it a stark contrast to the arid landscapes of the inland Kutch district. As you explore, you’ll notice ornate havelis, quiet alleyways, and remnants of its royal past, offering a sense of Mandvi’s historical significance as both a port town and a royal retreat.

  • All good things must end! Return to Bhuj, and fly to Mumbai where your tour concludes.
