A highlight of a tour of Sri Lanka is undoubtedly the accommodation and the service provided. Hotels in Sri Lanka achieve what many hotels around the world strive for – unique accommodation that reflects their country and service that’s outstanding and genuine. We often find this in Sri Lanka – the rest of the world should take notice!

Recently we stayed at the The Wallawwa hotel in Sri Lanka, again. We simply love this luxury hotel in Sri Lanka. One of the key reasons why it’s such a favourite with us is the service – the staff is polite, understated, professional, warm and extremely accommodating.

The hotel is close to the airport, so perfect for late night arrivals – which a lot of the international flights are. It’s a real hidden gem, tucked away on a beautiful, spacious piece of land and the perfect way to start a Sri Lankan tour itinerary. At the Wallawwa you will be introduced to the relaxed pace of life in Sri Lanka, while enjoying this gorgeous luxury hotel.

The Wallawwa itself is true Sri Lanka – which to us means stylish but with a strong reference and respect for nature. There are lots of outdoor spaces, traditional Sri Lankan décor and a touch of British heritage. The hotel boasts plenty of lush tropical garden, a wide-open lawn for playing croquet (and the croquet set is provided!), a kitchen garden which the chefs use extensively in the meals, glorious large trees, and a magnificent pool. There are verandahs and couches where afternoon tea is served, a pretty courtyard and pond, and comfy chairs set out under umbrellas.

It’s not a big property by room numbers – only 16 – so it’s quiet and has a real sense of tranquillity about it. The rooms are spacious – with window seats; private outdoor sitting areas that overlook the lawns and gardens; a substantial bathroom; cool décor of concrete, wood and warm-coloured furnishings and an espresso machine! The hotel serves a complimentary afternoon tea each day, and has a spa to help you unwind after a long international flight.

Yet, the real highlight for us is the meals – they are amazing. The Wallawwa hotel is a must visit for foodies in Sri Lanka. Drawing from the kitchen garden, the chefs have access to beautiful fresh herbs and vegetables. Ordering the traditional Sri Lankan rice & curry at lunch or dinner will see no less than about 7 separate bowls of Sri Lanka dishes served at your table. At breakfast – the hoppers and curry is a real favourite. There are also lighter dishes like wild mushroom soup and fresh salads. We never stay long enough to eat all the things on the menu we want to try!
