Introduction
Embark on a luxurious rail voyage of discovery through the cradle of stone architecture. This luxurious 8-day train journey will travel through timeless historical heritage sites, resplendent palaces, wildlife and golden beaches.
During this rail tour you will visit the ISKCON Hindu Temple in Bangalore – one of the largest in the world – see Mysore Palace, one of India’s grandest buildings and stay at a jungle lodge at Kabini where you will enjoy jungle safaris and a backwater cruise. Explore the World Heritage site and imperial city of Hampi with its ruins dotting the unearthly landscape and continue on to Badami caves, a UNESCO site, carved out of sandstone. The train will then proceed towards the coast, where you will enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches that await you at the former Portuguese Colony of Goa.
Day 1 Bangalore
Experience a formal welcome to the Golden Chariot train then proceed to the ISKCON Hindu Temple – one of the largest in the world. Later transfer to Yashwantpura Railway Station to board the train for an evening departure.
Day 2 Mysore
Visit Mysore Palace – one of India’s grandest of all royal buildings – highlights being the Durbar Hall Wing and personal art gallery of former royalty. Continue onto Kabini by vehicle and check into your jungle lodge. Enjoy an afternoon jungle safari to view the abundant wildlife that can be seen here including herds of Asian elephants, sambar and the occasional sighting of panther and tiger.
Day 3 Kabini
Start today with a backwater cruise on the River Kabini. Later return to Mysore, stopping en route to visit the nearby 18th century Srirangapatnam Fort and Dariya Daulat Bagh – a teakwood palace set amidst beautiful gardens.
The afternoon is yours at leisure in Mysore before tonight’s cultural program and dinner at Lalita Mahal Palace.
Day 4 Hassan
Why not start the day with traditional Indian bed tea – your personal attendant on the train will be happy to bring it to you!
The train reaches Hassan today. Disembark here to climb the 700 steps to the 10th century statue of revered Jain monk Bahubali. Later the train continues onto the ancient Hindu temples at Halebedu and Belur. Explore these fascinating temple complexes with their intricate sculptures of animals and sensuous dancers.
Day 5 Hampi
Arrive this morning into Hospet and disembark to explore Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with an expert local guide. Surreal and bewitching, the ruins of this imperial city dot an unearthly landscape that will leave you in awe. Giant boulders perched precariously over miles of undulating terrain create the backdrop for the ruins of its once opulent palaces, marvellous temples and massive fortifications.
Day 6 Badami
The train arrives at Badami today. Disembark and take an excursion to the UNESCO Badami caves and the Pattadkal Temple Complex. See the impressive 7th century rock cave temples at Badami carved out of sandstone hills. A highlight of the cave sculptures is an 18-armed dancing Lord Shiva. Later, visit the Pattadakal temple complex with its 10 temples built in a fusion of Indian architectural styles.
Day 7 Goa
The train rolls into Goa early morning with its beautiful sandy beaches stretching before you. Visit the most notable churches of this former Portuguese colony including the Basilica of Bom Jesus containing the relics of Saint Francis Xavier. There will be time for shopping in old Goa. In the afternoon, head to Goa’s sandy beaches for lunch at a resort and a swim.
Day 8 Bangalore
The train arrives into Bangalore late morning where your journey ends.
