  • Introduction

One does not see Mumbai in the sense of conventional “sightseeing”; a visit should include daily life experiences that allow you to get under the skin of this thriving, consuming, breakneck city.

Experience Mumbai like a local with the help of Lincoln Harris of India Unbound, who lived in the city for three years, and can coordinate all aspects of your stay – accommodation, transport, guides, and special activities – according to your particular needs and interests.

Why limit yourself to standard sightseeing ? We encourage you to include walks and special interest activities during your visit – the more willing you are to get amongst it, the more rewarding it is! Places covered in the following descriptions are a sample of what’s possible – they’ll vary according to the activities you choose, your pace/level of interest and traffic in Mumbai on the day!

  • Day 1 Mumbai

On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.  Take a late afternoon / early evening walking tour of traditional market areas of central Mumbai, including Crawford Market (foodstuffs), Zaveri Bazaar (gold market), Chira and Null Bazaars (mixed goods) and Chor Bazaar (Chor means ‘thieves’, this was traditionally where stolen goods turned up but now is more of an antique and bric-a-brac market). • Day 2 Mumbai

Today’s tour combines walks with private transport and local trains and taxis. Drive through some of Mumbai’s most sought after locales; visit a private historic home, filled with memorabilia; visit a traditional community housing complex and nearby market; lunch at one of Mumbai’s best known restaurants. Finish the day with a walk through the historic Fort area, including a stop for chai and cake at an ‘Irani’ café.

  • Day 3 Mumbai

The Elephanta caves, a series of rock cut Hindu temples, are located on an island in Mumbai’s harbour. A morning boat ride to the island provides a pleasant respite from busy Mumbai.

Late afternoon, visit the Dharavi slum (setting for Slumdog Millionaire), including visits to schools, NGOs and small industries. This walk, run by a local company, employs people from the slum as guides, and puts part of its revenue into community projects.

  • Day 4 Mumbai

No visit to Mumbai would be complete without a Bollywood experience! Visit the scene of a shoot or film studio and take a short Bollywood dance class! Or, simply watch a Bollywood movie at a traditional cinema hall.  Later, visit Juhu beach – home to many Bollywood stars. At sunset, this area, with its upmarket shops, restaurants and bars, comes alive with people from all walks of life.

  • Day 5 Mumbai

Would you like to see India’s busiest metropolis before it wakes ? Mumbai is an entirely different place before the day starts: serene and peaceful. Enjoy a quiet bicycle tour of the city, in the cool, early morning. This is Mumbai as few see it. Sleeping bodies dot the pathways, devotees come out and perform puja, whilst others jog or do yoga before the heat of the day. [Image: McKay Savage].

  • Day 6 Mumbai

Of course, ‘foodie tours’, can be woven into any day of your visit – sampling local food along the way, eating at restaurants which are popular or have become famous for a particular dish. If you are interested, a cooking class can be arranged at a family home.  Complete you stay in Mumbai with high tea at the famous Taj Mahal Palace Hotel prior to your departure.
