Palm Garden, Anuradhapura – bungalows set around spacious grounds and a beautifully cultivated garden, along with a swimming pool, make this a great hotel great value.

Queen’s Hotel, Kandy – a grand old dame of Kandy and one of the oldest hotels in the country. A star performer in the ‘Faded Glory’ category, but excellent central location and genuine heritage rooms, all for around US$50

Ambiente, Ella – simple rooms but fantastic views to Ella Gap and Little Adam’s Peak. Very homely feel

Mangrove Beach Cabanas, near Tangalle – this gets the prize for best value. Free standing bungalows with sitting area and beach views. Simple but well done and all for around $40

Tallala Retreat, Matara – a surfing and yoga retreat. Rooms have balconies/sitting area and are completely open to the sea breeze. The kind of place you could spend a few weeks at

Ladyhill, Galle – small rooms with even smaller TV, but great rooftop restaurant/bar with super views over the bay. Good if you dont plan on being in the room too much apart from sleeping

Lake Lodge, Colombo – small hotel just behind Galle Face. Simple rooms with nice interiors and exceptionally clean.
