Orissa
Get away from the well-worn path and big name monuments to savour some of India's most remarkable tribal communities and natural environments.
Orissa is India in her rawest form – wild natural beauty, remarkable temples unlike those in other parts of the country and, most enthralling of all, unique tribal cultures which survive in remote pockets of the state, seemingly removed from the modern world.
Day 1 Puri
Morning flight to Bhubaneswar, where you will be met and have a short tour of the temple city of Bhubaneswar before drive to Puri.
Day 2 Konark
In the morning visit the World Heritage listed Konark Sun temple; in the afternoon relax at the beach.
Day 3 Gopalpur
After breakfast drive to Gopalpur; en route visit the artisan village of Raghurajpur and Chilika Lake, the largest lagoon in Asia, which in the migratory season is inhabited by one million birds.
Day 4 Baliguda
After breakfast, drive to Baliguda; en route visiting typical Orissan villages. After a picnic lunch, visit the Kutiakondh tribal villages before continuing on to Baliguda.
Day 5 Rayagada
Early morning after breakfast drive to Belghar, from where you trek into the interior forest and mountain villages of the Kutia Kondh tribes. The Kondhs once practiced human sacrifice; these days they are frank though very hospitable people. After a picnic lunch amongst the Kondhs, proceed to Rayagada.
Day 6 Jaypore
After breakfast drive down to Chatikona to see the colourful weekly market of the Dongaria Kondh tribes (Wednesday only). The Dongaria people live very simply in the high slopes of the Niyamagiri Hills, where their predominant source of food is cultivated fruit. Later, drive to Jaypore, with a stop en route for picnic lunch and visit at a village of the Paraja tribe.
Day 7 Jaypore
After breakfast, drive to Ankadeli to visit the famous Bonda tribes, who come once a week for a regional market (Thursday only). This is a unique gathering of regional tribes people, with a large variety of wares for sale. Bonda woman wear and sell particularly colourful jewellery. Afterwards continue on to Lampatput and the nearby villages of the Gadaba people, who trace their origins to the important Hindu text the Ramayana. There is also a chance to watch the beautiful dance of the Dehmsa people. Return drive to Jaypore.
Day 8 Jaypore
After breakfast, drive to Kunduli weekly market (Friday only). This is the largest market of the area and attracts the greatest number of local tribes, including the Sana Paraja and Mali tribes. There is also an opportunity to visit some of the nearby villages and trek into the beautiful valley of Nandpur. Evening return drive to Jaypore for overnight stay.
Day 9 Araku Valley
After breakfast drive to the lush Araku Valley. In the afternoon trek to the million year old limestone Bora caves.
Day 10 Visakhapatnam
Morning drive to Visakhapatnam, a thriving port city in the state of Andhra Pradesh; arrive, check into hotel and rest of the day free at leisure.
Day 11 Visakhapatnam
Transfer to airport for flight to onward Indian city for connection with international flights home or further travel.
